Rocked up soaking wet, cold and tired and have to admit was a little worried looking at the reception. However, had a friendly welcome and directed to the cottage. This was lovely! Comfortable, clean and warm! Lovely fire, bathroom and kitchen plus comfortable beds!
Close to the IGA supermarket and bottle shop.
I would highly recommend and already thinking of a return trip to ride the bike trails

I've stayed here on a number of occasions, and the experience is pretty much the same each time apart from the number of people in the room I've booked. Most recently I was travelling with two friends and, as previously, we were allocated to a house in Dean Street opposite the IGA, which is very convenient for picking up food or the odd thing you've forgotten for the hike. The house is roomy and very clean (apart from any mess that may have been created since the morning) with a great shower. We stayed in the dorm room which sleeps six in bunk beds, and there are three or four smaller rooms that sleep two or three each. There are back and front verandahs if you fancy sitting outdoors, a sitting room beautifully heated by a wood stove, an adjoining dining room with a large table, a good kitchen if you want to cook meals and a nook with another smaller table out of the way of kitchen activity. The usual drawbacks of group living, such as snoring or someone who wants to watch TV late into the night, are inevitable but they're offset by the great people you meet there, especially since it's on the Bibbulmun Track which attracts some remarkable travellers, and others just touring the area - everyone full of curiosity and interesting stories. Highly recommended.

YHA Pemberton consists of 2 buildings.
Make sure you get a room or a bed in the cottage across the supermarket!
very spacious, good kitchen and great fire place, you can chop your wood in the backyard.

As others have found, there is a cottage opposite, which I was fortunate to stay in, it costs the same as the main building but is better, as it has more freedom and less "hostelly". More like a shared apartment, although the rooms are small and shared, they are rarely full. There is a wood fire that is your responsibility, but I loved chopping wood and making the fire so I looked after my fellow backpackers! Value is good too, I am settling for a generous 4 out of 5, but I would probably of given the place 5 out of 5 except the owner is an expletive. He was very rude about collecting rent, and always called me by the wrong name (after 3 months of being there!). Luckily he was away most of the time and a lovely English guy was running the place. Oh and very cheap wine in the booze shop, one of the things I miss about Australia.

Room Tip: Get in the cottage opposite like your life depends on it!

Be advised - there are actually two different buildings and accomodation type listed as this hostel. There is the main hostel building (not YHA) and a small cottage a short distance from the main office. We stayed in the small cottage.

The cottage is a gorgeous little building set away from the road and opposite a medium sized supermarket. There are only 3 rooms of which we stayed in the double bed room. It is very clean and looks just like a normal Aussie house with a nice kitchen, table and chairs and really big comfy couches.

Outside there is a lovely garden with great big BBQ.

This is a great little place and I would recommend. Please see the attached photos - of the cottage.

Room Tip: Ask for the cottage accomodation not the main backpackers hostel!
