Description: In 2015 we opened a fully refurbished family restaurant, one of the oldest restaurants in Prague, which still holds it original name – U Mecenase, aka The Maecenas. Come and take a seat under the 16th century vaults. Jan Mydlar, the most famous executioner of Prague, used to sit here in the times of Rudolph II; the wall still bears his signature inscribed in 1626. The original 13th century Lesser Town fortification wall is still visible in the gothic cellars below the restaurant. A non-smoking restaurant with 200 seats in 4 halls, each of them with its specific atmosphere. A smaller private dining room with 25 seats is styled as an Austro-Hungarian imperial salon. Everybody finds their favourite place here. Our team is ready to prepare various delicatessen of the Czech cuisine with quality and fresh produce. The restaurant is an ideal place for wedding receptions, corporate parties, business meetings or birthday celebrations.

We enjoyed the setting in the lower floor. It felt like we were eating in a wine cellar. We had tasty soup with spaetzle, then beef goulash with dumplings which was flavorful and spicy. Friends had the chicken schnitzel, which wasn't as flavorful. The apple strudel was very tasty and not too sweet.

The draft beer was delicious. I assumed it was Urquell.

The service was perfect. The wait staff was attentive, but not too overbearing.

The restaurant is located in New Town. If you cross the Charles Bridge and head to the left on the main roads you will come to it. A landmark for the restaurant would be the McDonalds across the street (believe it or not).

Great place for a few Beers and some Coffee and Cake !! Nicely decorated, modern restaurant / bar, good friendly service and not over the top price wise. A definite place to stop off when strolling around Mala Strana.

It looked cozy, but in reality had a terrible table set up - to large to be cozy, and we were entertained by a bad guitar medley of Pink Panther, Smoke on the Water played to pre-recorded back up music.

So cheesy.

The food was enjoyed by all of us, however. All in all, if in Prague, go find something cuter and more authentic.

We booked Christmas Eve dinner for our group of seven. We were in Prague for a week over the holidays, so we ate in several restaurants and found the food in this one to be quite good. We were not pleased with the cost, fully 30% higher than ANY other restaurant the we ate in during the week.

The food is traditional Czech, so quite meat-heavy. It is well prepared and nicely presented. The service was quite good and very pleasant. They were completely booked, but I assume that's a function of the holiday season. Still, it is worth having a reservation. The duck (house specialty) is exceptional.

The restaurant is easy to find, on the castle side of the River, just in front of St. Nicholas Church. You can walk uphill from the Charles Bridge or take a tram. The ambiance is very pleasant, as you can see from the pictures.

Only the price keeps this from a five star rating from me. There are SO many options for food that is equally good and less expensive.
