Are you reading this review because you want to know if staying at the Sofitel Grand is worth the money?
This is old world charm – rare and exquisite. One feels as though they have travelled back in time to a bygone era filled with czars and royalty, European aristocracy, dukes, lords, and ladies in waiting. Get it?
One certainly does not just «happen upon» one of these gems everyday in a world filled with Radissons, Marriotts, Best Westerns, and Hyatts.
It is certainly not only the exclusive, extravagant, elegant decor that makes one feel regal. That transition happens upon the first moments of entering (even though we were wearing only jeans and backpacks).
The spa which includes a pool, suana, hamman steam bath and 2 relaxation areas is elegant and relaxing and smells of spices, aromatherapy, and essential oils.
Our superior sea-view room was really comfortable with a great big double bed, nice pillows, fridge, bathrobes – all the amenities.
Although I wanted to spend as much time in the hotel as possible since we were staying only one night in Sopot, I was a bit worried about eating dinner there instead of going out to the fabulous French restaurant - «Cyrano and Roxane». Dinner, however, was perfect. I had venison tartar to start with and we both had fabulous steaks - filét mignons really. What I genuinely enjoyed was the pacing of the service. Nothing was rushed and so we could enjoy our night out («in») leisurely, sharing a lovely bottle of Polish red wine.
The winter price we paid for our seaside room was an amazing 630 Polish zlotys. (150 U.S. dollars). Fantastic!
Two small negatives to point out since it seems the manager reads every review on trip adivisor.
First, when booking a room, it might be wise to know that the 4th floor windows facing the ocean are very small. Next time, I will try one on the 3rd floor. This is really a bagatelle, especially if one is only there for one night.
Second – I love my single malts and while I certainly don't expect the prices in the bar to be on a parallel with other establishments, 300 zlotys (as I was informed) or (73 dollars) for 4 cl. of Macallan Ruby was about 3 times the going rate, and a disappointment. (I want to point out that other single malts are fairly reasonable).
These two minor setbacks, however, are equivalent to waking up in bed with Angelina Jolie and being disappointed by finding a freckle on her popliteal (space behind the knee).
In conclusion, staying at the Sofitel Grand is a lifetime experience, even though one might, in all positivity, question the reality of it all!More
