“Mystical church”

St. Francis's Wounds Church
Reviewed 26 December 2013 via mobile

Very unique church. It has very remarkable hungarian style with beautiful maiolica on the roof. It's mystical and there are almost no tourists.

Living in Budapest for the past year, one of my favorite walks was walking down from Castle Hill at the Fisherman's Bastion, and wandering past the various churches in Buda on my way to the Margit Bridge, from the Calvinist Church with it's colored tiles, to the various Baroque churches such as the Church of St. Anne's in the nearby Batthyany ter, to St. Francis Wounds.

St. Francis Wounds has a beautiful facade. The first time I walked by it, as well as subsequent times, it was locked. I was fortunate enough to be walking by one Sunday morning, however, and got a glimpse inside and it was beautiful. Visiting the various churches in Buda, and reading about their history, makes for a fascinating walk and an interesting little tour. It is a pleasant way to spend a sunny morning or even a wintry afternoon. Definitely make it part of your itinerary if you have the time, and be sure to stroll past this church and hope that the doors are unlocked. :) It's not someplace I would recommend trying to take in if your time is limited, but if you have a few extra days, take my advice and make time for a little tour of Buda that includes ecclesiastical sightseeing.
