Kungu iela is within the tourist area and many of the restaurants there offer traditional Latvian cuisine. While many of the restaurants manage this with decency and dignity, Kotai/Garden seems fake from the beginning to the very end.
The presence of an overly friendly greeter at the door and a list that included nearly all sorts of food, apart from pizza, should have told us enough about the authenticity of this place.
Nevertheless we entered the restaurant and ordered food and, as we were looking for traditional Latvian food, we choose dishes that were recommended on the list. The orders were placed, prosecco came and we sat happily waiting for out food to arrive. From then on the service was completely unprofessional. Dishes arrived separately, and one us got her main course while the others were still eating their starters. Wine we had ordered arrived only when inquired after. Some of the waiters spoke little english, and their behaviour left a lot to hope for.
The biggest disappoinment was the meat pot with mashed potatoes that was recommended as traditional Latvian dish. Instead of smooth, well and long cooked dish, we got something that seemed as if all the yesterday's leftovers had been hastily thrown in the pot and quickly heated up. Leftover potatoes had replaced the mash and vegetables were still al dente; the taste was ok, but the consistency definetely was not.
The only people I could recommend this restaurant for, are a large group of people with different and modest tastes; the list covers nearly everything
