Most hotel restaurants are ... meh. But the Chart Room, with its young and talented Sikh chef, is a pleasant surprise. The chef punches well above his weight, since he told us he had never been to culinary school. His cooking was outstanding - his cultural heritage seemed to enable him to produce bolder flavors than we had encountered in NZ, but it was not specifically "Indian food", but rather a celebration of local ingredients. Service, on the other hand, was sweet and willing but untrained. We ascribe this to the fact that we were there in the off-season and they had only one server to cover the two or three tables. The wine list was well-priced and had one of our favorite local NZ wines.
