Been there twice and is the best place ti see and photo black bears. If you can pay the extra and spend the whole day at ground level with these beautiful animals. They come really close. To bad hunters have to shoot them for fun!

I first visited Vince's sanctuary with my daughter in 1997. The platform had been built, but the small parking area was still adjacent to the feeding area. A volunteer met us at our car and escorted us down a path to the viewing area. On the way we passed within a few feet of several bears already dining! Today a large parking area is provided a short way into the woods and a an old school bus transports folks to the much larger pavilion. The pavilion was surrounded by bears of all ages with one beautiful brown phase bear. A special treat are the trees around around the deck with four or five cubs virtually overhead playing in the branches. It is quite amazing to see volunteers walking from feeding station to station among the bears while neither human or bear show any sign of recognizing the other's presence.
Make no mistake these are wild bears. They do not depend on the sanctuary for food. They are provided food only at a given time daily and it has become a part of their daily foraging route.
The feeding program ends well before the bear hunting season begins and the bears disperse over a wide area.
If you go be sure to ask a volunteer about the white five gallon pails next to the volunteers car tires.
The Sanctuary is funded by donations and admissions-$8 adults,$4 6-17, 5-under free.

My husband and I visited here on our honeymoon 16 years ago before the platform was built. I even had the oportunity to meet and talk with Vince Shute back then. Everything on that day was so amazing that we thought we would be disappointed. We learned there is no way we can be disappointed with this place. We loved it and our family loved it. This was a favorite part of a 2 week trip! I think we saw 30+ bears which included cubs.

We can't wait to go back again!

Imagine 20-30 wild bears having dinner and they are all there for you to watch... Ok, they are only "half wild" as they come to this spot for food all the time. But still, they live in the woods, there are no fences to keep them, they can come and go as they please. It was the most amazing experience. Unfortunately, we went on a wrong road first and only got there 45 minutes before closing time. That was really a pity, I couls have spent 2-3 hours there. These bears are so friendly and peaceful. It was very good that we had been to the Bear Center in Ely before to learn lots about black bears first, but to be so close to all these bears was absolutely awesome.

I keep coming back to this place every other year or so. It's so fun to see the bears in their element and to hear the volunteeres lecture about them. The platform is perfectly safe. You can learn so much from the volunteeres about bear's antural habits and behaviors. Plan for weather.
