We were on our first trip to the Nation's Capitol and wanted to see as much of the city as possible in 48 hrs! It was 7/1/10 and the start of the Independence Day holiday weekend. Our husband's were attending the National's game so my friend & I decided to take the Monument's by Moonlight trolley tour. The evening weather was spectacular and history came alive as Jorge was our guide through the city. The open sides of the trolley made for some terrific photo opportunities. Our planned two hour tour turned into three as we wound our way from the Capitol, down the Mall, Lincoln Memorial @ sunset, edge of Arlington, Georgetown, White House, etc. We felt safe at every stop along the way and got choked up on more than one occaision! We enjoyed this tour so much that the next day we did it again-this time with our husbands and two teenage sons. Jorge was our favorite tour guide, excited to share the city with us without any pretense. Best tour of any city I've ever traveled to!!

We've experienced the Old Town Trolley Tours in Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC. It is the best way to see any city you visit. Whether it's to allow you to hit the "high spots" quickly if you're short on time or to get you started on your vacation. The guides are a delight - each one with a different perspective on the same city or a special story to tell. It simply can't be beat. We will use it wherever we go when available. My husband and I are happy we discovered it. It was so wonderful we raved about it to our kids. So when we returned to Boston for our son's Masters graduation at Boston University he decided we all should go on the tour. What a great experience to share!!

I went back and forth a million times before deciding to book a “Monuments by Moonlight Tour”. The TripAdvisor Old Town Trolley reviews were so mixed, but I’m so glad I did!

We visited DC in JULY. The heat and humidity were insane, and the monuments are so spread out. There is no way we would have had the time or energy to get to all of them without the Trolley Tour, and choosing the Moonlight tour was a perfect way to beat the heat.

We made our reservations online to save a few bucks and arrived at Union Station around 6pm the night of our tour. After we checked in, we had some time to shop in Union Station before making our way to where the trolleys departed (a narrow concrete island in the middle of three lanes of cabs and tour buses, ack!)

NOTE: The Trolley DAY Tours are not designed for you to stay with the same driver for the entire tour (if you get off at any point). The Monuments by Moonlight Tour has the SAME driver for the whole evening. They wait for you at every stopping point, and allow you to leave your extra bags or drinks on the trolley while you explore the various stops along the way. That was very convenient and reassuring. We didn't waste time waiting for another trolley to come along (as many of the day tour reviews complain about). We were also fortunate to get a driver named Bill who was actually a Washington reporter in his past life, and BILL was awesome!

After leaving Union Station, we drove down 1st street to see the Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and the US Capitol. It was still light out and Bill pulled over in front of the US Capitol. Three other trolleys drove right passed while we took pictures and listened to his fascinating stories and the history of the buildings. That’s when I knew we were in for a great tour!

The tour moved on down Independence Ave, passed the Botanical Gardens, the American Indian Museum, the Air & Space Museum, and the other Smithsonian Art Museums, down to the Jefferson Memorial. Bill stopped for 25 mins or so and allowed us time to check out the Memorial and museum and get plenty of pictures before we moved on the Iwo Jima Marine Memorial and Arlington Cemetery in Virginia. Along the way, Bill gave us a ton of information and told us of his own personal experiences. The sun set while we were at the Iwo Jima and we got to take some great pictures before heading back to DC to the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Korean Memorial and Washington Monument.

I wasn’t sure what we would be able to see once it got dark, but the National Parks Service does an outstanding job designing the lighting schemes for these memorials. I’d almost say they were more amazing after dark! There were tons of people everywhere. We had about 45 minutes to visit all of the memorials and take more pictures. After that, we grabbed an ice cream cone and met back at the trolley. The last leg of the tour took us passed the White House and down Pennsylvania Ave back to Union Station. We started the tour around 7PM and it ended around 1030PM.

Despite some negative reviews, I have ZERO complaints about the Monuments by Moonlight Tour! We saw everything we wanted to see, had plenty of time to explore, and got an excellent narrative along the way. To top it off, we were able to get our bearings of the city without having to endure the hot summer sun, and exhausting our feet!

In fact, after the tour, instead of catching a cab back to our hotel, we decided to take a walk over to the Capitol Building (3 park-like blocks from Union Station) and took some amazing nighttime photos. It was perfect summer weather. There were no crowds, and we felt completely safe walking all the way around the Capitol campus (with our 11 and 15 yr old), eventually catching a cab near the Botanical Gardens after MIDNIGHT! It was the perfect start to our DC trip!

1) You MUST take this tour! Plan to do it the first night you arrive in DC. (Save your feet for the museums!)
2) Get your tickets and make your seat reservations online before you arrive to save a few bucks.
3) If you’re visiting in the summertime, bring along a bottle of water or something to drink.
4) CHOOSE A SEAT on the RIGHT side of the trolley for the best photos.

The Old Town Trolley is a great way to get to all of the sites in Washington. We used the trolley for two days and it saved a lot of walking as they stop at all of the major tourist attractions. The drivers are very friendly and very knowledgeable about the entire Washington area.

We were very pleased with the Old Town Trolley tours. All of the drivers we encountered were very pleasant and knowledgable. If you take the green line don't miss the National Cathedral! It is fantastic. The trolleys ran frequently until towards the very end of the day (note they end the day at 5:30 or so, which is hard if you want to go out and about in the evening). We got many "tips" on places to see that we otherwise would have missed!
