I saw that this place had great reviews but wasn't necessarily keen on another American fusion place. But I was pleasantly surprised -- the place is very funky; restaurant, cafe, bookstore, performance space -- nice homages to all kinds of interesting political and cultural figures, and the food was both affordable and surprisingly good. I took a big chance and got shrimp and grits; the grits were kind of cakes that were very well done and the shrimp were large and fresh, best of all was the lobster sauce. All in all very good indeed. Also they had key lime pie for dessert and it was very well done.

Every restaurant should have a bookstore, great art and a groovy vibe! I had an omelette and coffee—fair trade and delicious. Folks around me had yummy looking sweet potato pancakes and mimosas. Highly recommended!

A friend recommended this place for a late night after party. The experience was awful! The server was distant, seeming to be annoyed by our presence, and both the bar and kitchen were super slow! Our party waited 25 minutes for drinks. The server said it was because there were only 2 bartenders. Ok. We waited 45 minutes for wings. The manager, who was more concerned with being in charge than addressing the issue, blamed the server. The server blamed the kitchen. There was no effort to recover the lapse. Stay away!

I stopped here for breakfast on my last day in DC during a recent work trip. The food was uncomplicated and well-prepared, with an emphasis on organic, cage-free, etc. Loved the egg wrap and also the grits, which were creamy and comforting. Busboys and Poets is both a restaurant and a bookstore, and it has a nice indie bookstore vibe. I sat staring at a facsimile, pinned to the wall, of the Freedom Charter of the South African Congress Alliance. This should be required breakfast reading for everyone who holds power in Washington!
