You don't see this type of place too often in the US. Fresh baked bread, sliced to order. Pastries, flavorful pastries (try the ginger/pear combination if they have it). Thick, substantial donuts. Awesome coffee (Madcap). This isn't the place to camp out and work, but it is a place to grab your weekly bread, breakfast, or lunch. It's located near Van Ness metro stop.

Pleasant, upscale but also unpretentious bakery in relatively monochromatic Upper Northwest DC. I was the only person of color not behind the counter (though at least there was diversity among the staff - they weren't all people of color). The pastries and coffee were delicious. There's inside and outside seating, but no wifi.

I walked past this bakery by accident and was immediately mesmerized by the deliciously-looking bread in the window. Reminiscent of German bread, not that pale goop they sell as bread in this country. Stepping inside, the smell of fresh bread and baked goods was intoxicatingly delicious. I settled for an espresso, as well as a slice of the coconut cream cake. Both excellent. I definitely look forward to another visit!

Note also, that in addition to baked goods the bakery also serves lunch items (salads & sandwiches).

Great food, great atmosphere and excellent service from a friendly staff. The messy egg was worth every calorie and we also enjoyed the veggie frittata .

Mark Furstenberg brought real bread to Washington many years ago. When he left Breadline downtown, it just wasn't the same. Now, with Bread Furst, Washington has the real deal back again. Whether you want a baguette, croissant, a levain loaf or his famous palladin loaf, you can't go wrong. People have said his breads are "overdone", but he will counter that by saying that's the way they should be. I haven't bought anything here that wasn't as good (or better) than what I've had in Paris. The sandwiches served here are also terrific, presented, of course, on his breads.
