We were lucky enough to get to drive this road with no traffic in front of us - totally amazing! It's such a beautiful drive - lots of twists and turns and the road itself feels new. A little scary when cars/RVs are coming the other way as the road is quite narrow. Would love to drive this road again one day.

It is one lane most of the way. The scenery is beautiful, but we had to dive on the very edge of the road or were sometimes forced off the road by very large trucks driving down the center of the lane. Some of these vehicles were large recreational vehicles and some were trucks pulling horses and farm equipment. On many of the blind curves, you would almost run head on into these people. There must be better roads (safer) than a one lane road winding up in the mountains for these people to use. There were some people going very fast too. The views were beautiful, but the poor judgement of others really is something to consider. Make sure you ravel this road on a day with good visibility. Good driving conditions are a must.

This was a super fun drive, beautiful scenic views. Be prepared for a slow drive due to both steep, winding roads and the fact that it's a one-lane road with traffic moving in both directions. Had to pull over a couple of times to let other cars pass. That was tricky... please just drive carefully.

From the blue of Lake Tahoe to the heat of the Valley this was a great way to come over the Sierras. Yes, the road is steep and twisty (nothing like some of the roads in England or Scotland, US travellers beware!), but the scenery makes it well worthwhile. The lakes in the mountains were great, the only negative was that it was quite misty due to a big forest fire miles away in the Fresno area which spoilt the long distance views.

This road is not for the faint of heart and is not recommended for trailers and those prone to car sickness! Starting in the mountain town of Arnold and head east. Stock up on snacks and gas in Arnold. Make your first stop at Calaveras Big Trees State Park.. Take the walking tour which is self guided. Continue on and enjoy the scenery. As you approach Bear Valley the Dardenelles will be off to your right. BV is a small community but you can find the friendliest people here and can get gas and food. Continue east from BV and the road narrows as you approach Lake Alpine. Stop and enjoy some fishing, kayaking, camping, hiking or food at the lodge. From this point forward the road is narrow and curvy until you reach Monitor Pass. Slow going with a few mountain lakes to enjoy. The fall colors can be spectacular but be advised some areas were burned this summer. Remember this road is closed in the winter so plan accordingly.
