Beautiful drive. Extremely frustrating to suddenly arrive at a gate closing the road. Like u couldn't put that at the bottom of the hill? All the locals know this happens at the first threat of snow. The Angels Camp / Murphys side is well marked from the bottom of the hill. Murfreesboro had no such notices. Very frustrating.

Love this pass! Many places to stop and picnic, fish and enjoy the scenery! Alpine Resort offers Camping, Cabins, and a Lodge with wonderful Lunch and Dinner during the season... Spring through early Fall. Spicer Dam, great place for picnic boating and on the way in... stopping by a creek side ... getting wet for toddlers ... at the creek is perfect. Traveling further up the road via dirt is Utica Dam another scenic Gem... on Hwy 4 Mosquito Lake great for fishing and photography.... it's about a two hour drive.. some do it in 1-1/2 on a good day to Carson City... Markeleville is a perfect stop for lunch or blueberry pancakes at the old hotel.... 20 minutes down the road.. you can turn off to South Lake Tahoe or continue on the 89 to Carson City... Enjoy the #1 scenic route of California

My husband and I came from the Markleeville side of the mountain. I was doing research of the area including Ebbet's Pass for my book project. Traveling toward it on Highway 4 was fine until we were going up on switchbacks in the snow. Then the closed Iron Gate at one juncture killed any plans to reach the summit. Imagine navigating the narrow, twisty thing in an SUV and trying to squeeze to one side to let another vehicle pass by. The fall down from the edge is a long one! So we parked our Tahoe and hiked past the gate and up the windy road. It was fantastic. I took gobs of photos and we had so much fun! Even though we didn't get to drive to the top, we loved the exercise and peaceful surroundings in the stillness of winter.

We were lucky enough to get to drive this road with no traffic in front of us - totally amazing! It's such a beautiful drive - lots of twists and turns and the road itself feels new. A little scary when cars/RVs are coming the other way as the road is quite narrow. Would love to drive this road again one day.
