Ebbetts Pass Scenic By-way

After breakfast, we made a 9 o’clock departure on highway 4 toward Markleeville, county seat for California’s smallest county, Alpine. It’s only 36 miles but it took almost two hours of driving on a two-lane curvy road. It was scenic all the way with giant pines on all sides. There were numerous small lakes and campgrounds. After passing Mosquito Lake, we got to a peak marked 8,050 feet. We thought that was the main pass. Not to be. Later we came to the real Ebbetts Pass, 8,730 feet. This little highway was first cut through the Sierra in 1800. It was used by miners with some hope the railroad would come this way one day. But Donner Pass, some miles north, got the railroad. Highway 4 was dirt and gravel in its early days. It’s now well paved. But they don't even try to keep it open in the winter. Our turnaround point was Markleeville where we had a nice outdoor lunch.

I drive over several times a year only in summer because it's closed in winter. I take my Harley Davidson sportster over when it's not a busy weekend so there is not much traffic. Then enjoy a little gambling in Nevada. If you love to camp this is the road to travel.

There's probably a reason why there are so few reviews on here. It's not exactly the shortest or quickest route over the Sierras but it sure is one of the most scenic ones. The road (as any mountain pass really) is steep and curvy and narrow in places but because there's next to no traffic it doesn't matter. Things get busier on the western side from Lake Alpine / Bear Valley on-wards.... but here the road is wide and pretty straight. It's the eastern side (incl Highway 89), pretty much all the way to Meyers that is the real highlight.

I have never seen a place as beautiful as this highway. I will be back for sure when in the area and the roads are open. Words can't describe the natural beauty in the area.

Beautiful drive. Extremely frustrating to suddenly arrive at a gate closing the road. Like u couldn't put that at the bottom of the hill? All the locals know this happens at the first threat of snow. The Angels Camp / Murphys side is well marked from the bottom of the hill. Murfreesboro had no such notices. Very frustrating.
