Great staff, very helpful and earnest, but professional. Welcoming place. Nice view with a pier that got you away from the pool noise, if that’s your thing. This is a simple place with nicely maintained rooms. Beautiful setting with palm trees and nice places to relax. Definitely not overcrowded due to the size. 4 adults in a 3 bedroom / 2 bath. Two distractors: oven wouldn’t work and issues with leaky fridge. Appliances seemed new, not sure what the deal was. Staff made sure we had bottled water and ice. They sent staff up 3x to check oven, but had to make do with alternative dining plans.

Be prepared for a bumpy ride into town but that’s par for the course on the south side.

Diving companies picked up at the pier, manta rays hang out at the pier, beautiful sunrise/sunset. Pleasant staff. Couple of restaurants in walking distance and a simple market also nearby.

Our entire family gathered for a holiday vacation. Athens Gate was a great choice - friendly, kayaks, snorkeling gear and bike available, a great pool and a pleasant beach area. All three generations had a great time.

We stayed in unit 6 for three nights, a family of 4 with two college age kids. While the unit was beautiful and spacious the location is a problem. You are 2 and 1/2 miles from San Pedro town, so your options for restaurants and nightlife are to cab it or rent a golf cart for about $70/day, which we did. The ride into town is sort of fun for the first five minutes but then you realize that you are inhaling exhaust fumes from the all the other carts (no there are no electric golf carts). A gas mask might not be a bad idea!

As others have mentioned, the water off the beach is murky and the bottom is covered with sea grass. Access to the clear aqua water is possible at the end of the long dock. This is okay, but the space is small and means you’re crowded with other guests, who might be chill or loud drinkers (we encountered both).

The staff are really nice and helpful but overall we found the place overpriced, not very special, and inconveniently located.

On behalf of our entire team, we would like to thank you for taking the time to review your experience at Athens Gate. We are pleased you found your suite to be beautiful and spacious and happy our staff was helpful.

We are however disappointed that you chose to rate our property poorly based on our location. After all, we do state our location right on the homepage of our website - which most of our guests find to be a plus - and there’s a selection of hotels and resorts closer to bars and nightlife if that’s what one is looking for.

For potential guests reading this, please note that we are located approximately 2.5 miles south of San Pedro Town. The trip to town takes approximately :15 minutes (via golf cart or taxi), and a portion is via hard-packed sand streets. We enjoy our location as do our guests as we are accessible to town yet away from the hustle and bustle.

Regarding the beach, it’s important to us that our guests are aware that the sea beds in Belize have Seagrass or "Turtle Grass" growing, this is harmless and in fact is an important part of Belize’s ecosystem. This grass can grow in our shallow waters as we have such strong protection from the World's second largest barrier reef. This means our waters are warm, calm, and shallow for quite a distance, and we do not get those black flag/strong wave and undertow days like some destinations such as Cancun does. For guests wishing to swim in the Caribbean the dock has stairs leading into the water, and it is accurate that other people may be using the dock.

Athens Gate is a small intimate property and we realize our resort, and indeed the island of Ambergris Caye and/or country of Belize may not be the perfect fit for everyone. We want visitors to be happy no matter which resort, location or destination they choose, and encourage vacationers to research their choices thoroughly. If you are wondering if our resort and location is right for you, please feel free to reach out to us.

Stayed with my wife and daughter. First, while the hotel is somewhat remote (requiring travel over dirt roads), we felt this added to the quaintness, quiet, and sense of seclusion. The hotel is attractive and very clean. The rooms were humongous, much larger than we needed, with a separate room and bathroom for our daughter, and a large living room From our porch we had a wonderful view of the beach and water. There isn’t a restaurant, but the sister property very close by serves a delicious breakfast and lunch. The best part about this hotel is the staff! They were all extremely friendly and willing to go out of their way to help. Cindy is very knowledgeable and a problem-solver, organizing tours, scheduling your day, and making dinner reservations, all with a smile. Danny was a friendly and charming bartender, flexible with the type of individual tastes desired, never pushy with alcohol. Denice (“the menace”) was a true factotum, sweeping the grounds, cleaning the pool, taking your luggage, putting up hammocks, pulling down a coconut to eat, and even escorting my daughter around—he was so friendly and caring, asking about my daughter when she was sick! Even the night-time security guard, Louis, was attentive and available, shining a flashlight on the golf cart so I could lock it properly. Apparently he would clean it daily! At the end he wrote us a note on a large, beautiful shell that we could take home. This kind of service is outstanding! While you will find cheaper properties or those with more amenities, this is the place to stay!

Athens Gate in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye Belize (Central American) is amazing! We were a family of 7 staying here (5 adults and 2 children) and we Loved it! Right on the beach! Poool! Bar! Bar connects to the pool :) the service is Great! They take really good care of you there. Cindy and her team went above and beyond and were extremely helpful. You can book all your tours right there at the hotel. Rooms are clean and spacious. The rooms come with everything you need and more! Not to mention that they are beautifully decorated. I miss this place already. I would recommend renting a golf cart which the hotel can also help you with. This is nice to have while staying on and exploring the Island. Ps. You receive a free welcome drink when you arrive at Athens Gate! The Belize Punch is really good! The Hotel has Pool toys, giant jenga, actual tv channels, wifi, and other games. I highly recommended this place and would definitely stay here again.
