This was our first time to Belize and we are so happy that we picked Portofino. The staff was amazing, assisting with all travel arrangements, arranging water activities. Such as snorkeling tours, and ensuring we saw as much of the coral reefs, species like nurse sharks, turtles and much more. The food was excellent & location was incredible with thatch roof cabanas for ambiance. The grounds were cleaned and maintained daily. We loved the quiet "away from it but not too far away from it" feeling. Pictures are accurate as viewed in the description and Portofino surpassed our expectations. We would certainly stay at this resort again

Enjoyed this small hotel on the beach .We had a beach front unit on the main floor. Well worth the extra cost over a regular unit. Very nice room, large, clean and well laid out with large bathroom. Restaurant was excellent. Most resorts are reached by boat and Being an ex British colony, the island is a hang over from colonial times. The town of San Pedro is a cross between maui 40 years ago and Isla de mueres with its golf carts. I would go back, which is not what i would say about most Caribbean islands. Only negative is that at certain times of the year the beautifully warm water was covered with seaweed.

My wife and I spent a week here and we enjoyed our stay. Perhaps the best part of Portofino is the staff. The staff here is just amazing, to say that they are friendly and helpful is an understatement. They quickly get to know you by name and work hard to make your stay most enjoyable. The service is superior in all respects.

Overall we found the buildings and grounds to be clean, the food to be really, really good and the setting beautiful. We stayed in one of the “VIP” huts. The large expanse of windows on the front of our hut offered lovely views out across the pool to the beach and ocean. We could see the waves breaking at the reef which sits maybe a quarter mile off shore. The room itself was a bit on the worn side but very clean. The AC seemed to struggle a bit to keep up but it worked and the mini fridge was a welcome addition to keep the bottled water chilled. Some might be put off by the toilet and shower not having doors but the design and placement of each offers privacy.

The restaurant on site puts out some great food, we were pleased with each and every meal and since we had gone with the “all inclusive” plan, we ate most of our meals there during the week. No regrets on that, getting to town and back can be a bit of a hassle, the on-site restaurant was convenient and in our view, very, very good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The wait staff, Shiovellie, Marco and Ivan were excellent and getting to know them was most enjoyable. It would have been nice had the all-inclusive included wine but we knew going in that it did not so we grabbed a couple of bottles at duty free in Belize City on our way in and enjoyed them by the pool throughout the week. That said, the bar makes excellent frozen drinks that are included in the plan.

A couple of things I would note about Portofino.

First, as many others have noted, you cannot swim off the beach. The seaweed (sargassum?) is thick and two guys were pretty much employed full-time raking it off the beach and out of the water. The Mexico Rocks snorkeling site is just a quarter mile or so off the beach but the only way to get there is to pay about $50 per person for guided tour. The dive shop on-site is convenient but not always the most economical. Check around for the best prices, we found Tuff-E-Nuff to be very good and a bit cheaper. That said, whoever you go with the snorkeling is out of this world!

Second, there is zero night life at the resort. There is no music or any kind of entertainment in the evenings, no resort-sponsored activities of any kind. We were ok with it, had a late dinner, maybe some time talking with other guests by the pool and early to bed. The sun comes up early so it was early to bed and early to rise. Having coffee available at 6AM was nice. We did not spend a lot of time watching TV, but the availability of the major network station out of NYC, was a nice.

Overall, there is a really nice place and I’d recommend it. We had an exceptional time, throughly enjoyed the snorkeling trips and made a day long adventure to see the Mayan site at Lamanai. Just know what you signing up for. It is a long way from town and is probably not the place for you if you like an active night-life.

Staff was very friendly and helpful, complimentary drink and tour upon arrival was nice. They have daily turndown service with treats.
Room was very nice, huge, but a bit rough around the edges. The shampoo, conditioner and body wash were in tubs with a spoon for use. This was nice for reducing waste/recycling however, I was a bit concerned about the sanitary part as there was someone else's hair in one of them. Heads up to the newly wed who haven't lived together: in the treetop suite the water closet doesn't have a door. Also, there was only one tiny towel bar. There was next to nowhere to hang our things. We ended up hanging many things outside, which I'm sure wasn't entirely appreciated by our neighbors. There is AC and TV in the room. The light switches were a bit random, unmarked, couldn't figure out what worked what.
The pool is great! Loved it. Lots of seating. Tried the hot tub once and it was the same temperature as the pool....Beach side is very nice however, not sure if this was the time of year but there was a lot of seaweed piling up on the shore, they had people cleaning it up all day. Not exactly a place to swim off the beach, plus the boat traffic is pretty regular.
They have bicycles you can ride however they sit outside so are a bit rough. Plus the road that far north isn't paved so it's not a very pretty ride. Restaurant is expensive but the food was very good.
For San Pedro itself: remember lots of places will be closed on Sundays. Also there is a minimum purchase for using your credit/debit card and it's $20 or $25 BZD. And I heard that the sales tax applies if you use card, but doesn't when you pay with cash. I liked our hotel but it is a 20 minute water taxi ride into San Pedro which is $11 USD/per person per ride. So if you want to be more active, I'd recommend staying nearer to San Pedro. But if you want seclusion and quiet, Portofino was great.

Hi bansheecryz,

Thank you very much for your review. We pride ourselves in customer service excellence and respect every review. Many of our guests and travel partners select Portofino Beach Resort for peace and tranquility as it is away from the hustle and bustle of San Pedro Town; yet, just a 15 minute boat ride into town or a 30 min golf cart drive. I am happy you think Portofino was great!

We are very sad to hear about the shampoo situation. We do a daily double room inspection to ensure that the quality meets our standards. I am very sorry you didn't mention it earlier or we would have take appropriate actions. Our ultimate priority is to make our guests comfortable and satisfied during their stay. The design of our bathrooms don't allow us to put a door on the shower; however, we do have some other rooms with bathroom doors if that makes our guests more comfortable.

The sargassum (Seaweed) is only temporary, we are faced with it every year for about a month or two. I am happy to say as of this week there are no more sargassum on our beach. Our bicycles are brand new and serviced weekly.

There is indeed a minimum purchase of US$10 most places. That is very normal. So we advise our visitors to take small cash amounts with them for petty purchases. We don't know of anywhere in Belize that applies sales tax if you pay with card but doesn't if you pay with cash.

Thank you so much again for your review of our resort and we look forward to hosting many more travelers looking for a unique vacation experience.

Sincerely,
Management

My husband and I stayed at Portofino for 6 days and we were so happy that we had chosen this property. The booking process and right thru our stay was flawless.
At arrival we were greeted at the dock by Henry who had cold towels and big smile on his face. He was very professional and accomodating and ensure that we were short of nothing for our stay.
We did a few tours with the onsite dive shop and they were all fun. The snorkelling was great and the guides were friendly.
Henry organized carts for us to visit the secret beach and also made good recommendations for eating in town.
We had 1 small issue during our stay with the AC in our unit but Henry ensured that the matter was adressed and followed up every day to ensure that all was well. He would check in with all his guests everyday to make sure everyone is enjoying. He definitely is a great asset to your resort. We loved him! No one has ever cared for us the way he did, and we are avid travelers.
Marco at the restaurant was full of life and ensured that we were taken care of when we ate at the restaurant.
Everyone else always greeted us by name and was super friendly.
The rooms are starting to show their age, but we looked pass this fact.
We will definitely be back!
Thanks for a great Belize vacation and to your amazing employees who go beyond to cater to a memorable vacation.

Room Tip: All the rooms have amazing views.
