I'm glad Ranguana Lodge is still there, still looks the same. Wonder if the "Leslies" are still involved. I/we stayed there a number of times over the years. Always drove down from Oregon or Wisconsin or Arizona in my motorhome. The cabins are simply lovely, private, comfortable and a gentle slice of paradise.
I love Belize and Placencia has been my favorite Belize hangout over the years. Walking distance down the longest Conch shell sidewalk (hurricane disrupted occasionally and re-layed) to anywhere Placencia of interest. In my view.
When I first went there I had to buy butter in a can because there was no refrigeration at the only market. Plenty of beer if you like Belikin beer ( and I do...thank you Bowen family) and always rum somewhere.
Over the years the infrastructure improved...internet cafes, more restaurants with passable, then fair, then Great food...magnificent shrimp farmed locally...and really, really good times.
Trips out to Laughing Bird Caye (booked in town) where where I got a bit far from the shore and faced down a giant (so it seemed at the time) Reef shark as I looked it eye to eye while swimming slowly backward toward the Caye. A bit frantic I told my guide "Shark! Big! There!" while pointing at water behind me.
The older guide said something like "Oh, that's just Ralph. He won't hurt you unless he's really hungry and you're bleeding"
I said "that's really encouraging" and walked across the island and snorkeled on the other side where I ran into a monster Spotted Eagle Ray which was far prettier and far less heart thumping.
