The Quetzalroo is more of an apartment than a backpackers' hostel and is all the better for it. It lies in a modern, quiet corner of Zona 10 and can be reached via the Metro bus system.
While my room (no. 6) wasn't that large, this was more than compensated by the very friendly family atmosphere in the communal area. Thanks to Maria the owner for inviting me and others to share supper, allowing me to meet visitors from various walks of life. Secondly, to Gabriela who let me use her laptop and helped me with a tricky on line check in for my flight the next day. And finally to Antonio for getting up at 4 a.m. to drive me and others to catch the said flight.
Opinions vary as to how safe the neighbourhood is. I was cautious the first evening and dined at a local fast food place before sunset; on the second night, Maria stepped in as above. You should ask local advice but it looked OK to me.
So, an excellent stay and if I'm back in Guatemala City, wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Quetzalroo again.More
