The Mercure Hotel in Guatemala City is very good option for someone that looks for nice and spacious rooms at a reasonable price. Also the hotel is very well located in the middle of zona Viva and very close to the main business areas of the city. The staff is very friendly and always willing to help. It counts with a small gym and the restaurant has a very simple menu (but there is plenty of nice restaurants at walking distance from the hotel).
I now live in Guatemala for 3.5 years already but spent over two months at Mercure during my transition and Mercure hotel was a perfect fit for my needs at that time.

The suite was a spacious and quite roomy. Beds were very clean although quite firm - too much so for my particular taste. The room was clean, but the upholstered furniture was stained. Blackout curtains also had stains. Laminate flooring had cracked and warped in several places. Travertine in showers could be kept better but the shower was huge and the water pressure amazing. The hotel didn't seem particularly busy. Food in restaurant was good and prices were reasonable - comparable to American moderately priced meals. Notable was that although it was a suite, the hotel had nothing but cookware to use in the kitchen. No silverware, glasses or dishes. (?) Airport transportation was not free as in most other hotels in Zona Viva. It was $5 per person to the airport.

I checked into the hotel at 9 am and paid $30 plus tax for the early check in. We were going to a full day at the IRTRA park in Zone 12. I was running late due to a huge accident outside the city when arriving from Antigua. I was asked to use a credit card for the room charges/incidentals. I didn't pay attention at the time but I did clarify that I had prepaid for the room thru Hotels.com. When I checked out the next day I was given a bill for $51.64 for the incidentals and checked out. At the airport I noted a charge pending for Q 1000 or $130.94. It took me most of a day to get this corrected. Was told it was a hold for incidentals. The charge is to be cancelled. The review would be higher if not for the hassle of dealing with this problem. I do no understand the need for pending that amount of money even after my final bill was paid. What if I didn't pay attention and call this to their attention?

This hotel has one of the best locations in Guatemala city. It is near the airport and in the heart of Zona Viva. Security measures are the best that I had experienced in Guatemala. It has mini bar, microwave, coffee maker and other amenities in every room. It also offers a good breakfast buffet included in the room rate.

Room tip: If you come from El Salvador, ask for the packages that include bus transportation and a three days, two nights accommodation.
