I visited this place all the time as a kid. It's a great walk from Alton to the dam/museum too! In addition to learning about the dam, and taking it the sites around it, this place usually has great activities year-round for kids.

Impressive museum with a lot of interesting exhibits about the Mississippi River. Also enjoyed a tour of the locks and dam, and we were lucky to get to see a barge go through a lock. The movie was worth watching, too. And the museum, movie, and tour were all free of charge.

We recently took some of the family here when they were in town for a visit. I think our grown children enjoyed the hands-on exhibits as much as the grandchildren did! We missed the tour but plan to go back and take it in.

This museum was so fun! Everything is completely FREE including the lock and dam tours! Everything was very interesting. Our 6 year old was very interested and really enjoyed the museum(especially the barge simulator) and the tour on the dam. Everything is wheelchair accessible too which was great for our other son in a wheelchair.

This was my second trip to the museum. It's a wonderful museum with nice exhibits for all ages. They even have a simulator to try to drive a tug boat down the Mississippi River. I crashed each time. The museum is free, and offers a free tour of the lock and dam. (Donations are accepted.) The tour can only take up to 25 people, and you have to sign up for it. I took the lock and dam tour on this trip. Our tour guide was great. We got to see a tug boat and barges go through the lock from above. Very cool and highly recommended.
