Hotel Residence Karim is a reasonable budget choice in Tozeur. The rooms and courtyard are pleasantly tiled, attractive and bright. Look at a few rooms before choosing one as the forth room we looked at was much better (bigger, birghter) than the first three. The shower worked very well with good water pressure and hot water. There is a fair amount of street noise and it was quite light in the morning so we woke up early but breakfast is not served until 8am. The location is not bad - walking distance to the louage station, old town, palmerie, restaurants.

The owner/manager (?) was very friendly and spoke better English than staff at other hotels we stayed at in Tunisia. He can organise 4WD tours at lower prices than the travel agents and we were satisfied with the trips he organised. At first he came across as one of those hotel staff trying the hard sell on tours for commision but I think he was also genuinly trying to help us and seemed concerned that we had a good time around Tozeur.

Breakfast was very simple although typical of Tunisia- a bit of bread, jam and coffee.

Overall I'd definately recommend Hotel Residence Karim and visiting Tozeur and surrounding areas.

Room Tip: Look at a few rooms as they vary quite a lot.

This is not a expencive place to stay...We did stay at his place for to nights. The room was small with a small window...When you did take a shower in the bathroom all did got weet.It was guests in the room beside us playing music and who did stay outside and talk together until 2.30 in the night witout nobody care abouth it.We was lucky that they did have a smal place inside a garage who we did got for 5 dinar every nigth...if not we did have to stay with the car in the street. No towels in the room. The bed was nice. The boss in the hotel(atleast we did think it was) a woman did lay in a sofa when we did arived and did not care. The people who did work with horsdriving did hunt hard every time we did go outside..

Of all of the budget hotels we stayed in in Tunisia, this is the one that we enjoyed most. The hotel was beautifully decorated, and was located just across from the palmerie, and a 10 minute walk to the medina. There is also a bike rental next door, which was fab!

Above all else, the host was really welcoming, friendly, and accommodating and was able to organise a tour for us at very short notice.

Breakfast was provided and wifi was available in the common spaces. The roof was nice and sunny and the rooms had radiators which were turned on for winter nights.

Would stay here again.

Equivalent of £6 each for a double room per night. Basic spartan rooms, reasonably clean. A few random wires hanging out the walls. Air con not working in any rooms and it was a VERY hot humid night, had to lie on top of bed with wet towel on me to cool down, finally stopped sweating at 3am and slept. Bathroom basic and the smell was horrific!!! Drains stank and you could almost taste the smell which filled the entire room. We had to keep running water down the drains and eventually tried plugging up the shower drain. Breakfast was sliced bread and a small pot of jam with half a cup of coffee. For the money, this was all fine, and don't let this particular experience put you off as it is a nice traditional courtyard set hotel, in a unique setting.

This is a budget place to stay, very well located opposite the 'Palmerie' and on the main road that leads to the medina. The hotel itself is pretty inside due to the colourful tiling along the floors and walls. We were given a 'family room' accomodating four. It had a double and two single beds in a teeny weeny room with no external windows - just windows looking into the hotel corridor. Two of the beds were perfectly comfortable, but one of the single beds had such a thin mattress that the metal frame of the bed could be felt through it - and even our 10 year old had difficulty sleeping in it. The tiniest of bathrooms (with a shower outlet next to the loo and no cubicle) was on its last legs - I think they were about to do some work on it. The water was luke warm only. The breakfast was simple (bread, jam & coffee) and did the job. The two women in charge of cleaning the rooms and serving the breakfast were very sweet and friendly. The guys working at the (very smokey) reception gave advice when asked. Overall I thought that the hotel had a lethargic and slightly depressed atmosphere, and didn't fulfill its potential to be more charming. This is a 'backpacker' hotel, so you get what you pay for I suppose - but I think there are plenty of other places in the same price bracket and it would be worth checking out the alternatives. I think this is an average place to stay relative to the budget hotel bracket.

Room Tip: Ask to see a couple of rooms before choosing one.
