This is a very interesting experience that is not widely promoted by many of the local hotels and tour operators. There seems to be some philosophical resistance to this activity as people are not 100% sure what happens to the Lions after today finish their tour of duty entertaining us tourists. It is really very interesting as you go for a walk in the bush with a couple of lions that are two years or younger. The whole experience takes about three hours and costs $150 US per person which includes ground transport from your accommodation to the encounter site, a 45 minute bush walk with some young lions and then a beverage, including alcoholic beverages and a snack before your trip back to town. Probably one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences and glad to of done it and I am generally hopeful that this organization does have the best interest of lion survival in their hearts

The people at Lion Experience are providing quite an experience! While there are many views about walking with animals, the team at Lion Experience are truly doing things in the name of conservation and what is hopefully best for the lion population in the long run. They do a great job of talking about the work that they are doing, how it fits into larger conservation efforts and what next steps are for their lions at each stage of the process. If you are near the area, it is worth the short drive to the encounter to have an unforgettable walk with some lion cubs!

On the 30th of January Liki took us on a walk with Tshaka and Khumalo. It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I must admit when I was told they were cubs I thought we would be holding them but when they came out of the bush they were a lot larger than I had expected. They were not drugged and in fact played football with my husband with a lump of elephant dung! They seemed to enjoy themselves as much as we did. The conservation program was explained to us and was wholly plausible to help with the decline in population of these magnificent animals. On returning to the UK we found that the video taken on a USB stick wasn’t performing and emailed the company not holding out a lot of hope for a duplicate to be sent , how wrong we were within a day we had another copy sent over by dropbox. How very efficient and great delight to me as I was so disappointed that we couldn’t play it to our friends. We hope to visit the area again the people were lovely and this walk was the most amazing thing possible. We will do it again in a heartbeat.

One of the best experiences while in Livingstone. The lions were walking free and weren't drugged. The encounter was executed with the lions under the animal's own terms (stand up when the lion does, don't cross its shoulder line while walking, don't touch their ears etc.). You could really see that the keepers and the lions had a special bond.

Would still want to know what happens to the lions that grow up and aren't suitable for the walks anymore.

Thank you for taking the time to review our organisation. We are pleased to hear that you had a good time.

The lions are retired from walking with guests at approximately 22 months, once at this stage they then move onto a night encounter hunting phase which they do until they are approximately 3 years old, please note in this stage all human contact is removed. Once they are through the night encounter stage they are then bonded with other lions of different blood lines to form bonds and then move on to the semi-wild release area. Through all of these stages data is collected to ensure that they are able to hunt and normal instinctual behaviors are being exhibited. You can learn more about the program from visiting the lionalert.org page.
