Although the rooms and bathrooms need renovating we would still stay here again. The colonial graciousness, history, gardens with warthogs and baboons, and view of the the bridge to Zambia with the mist from the falls in the background, are not to be missed. The breakfast is excellent and the buffet with local tribes singing and dancing is good. Try and book a table just behind the water feature, otherwise a few insensitive people stand in front of you as they video the dancing.
The hotel has extensive lawns but oddly, only 4 chaise on the lawns so people have to sit on steps or walls.
The falls are a 10 to 15 minute walk away through the national game park. The hotel has a security guard, Lindani, stationed at the beginning of the walk and he was most helpful and kind. On both occasions when we walked the path he insisted on escorting us. The one time it was certainly needed as there was an elephant very close to the path. Note that there is a $30 per person entrance fee to see the falls. They accept credit cards but only between certain hours so check first or just take cash. Wear a rain hat and rain coat. One can rent a raincoat at the entrance. Give yourself 1.5 to 2 hours at the Falls.

Now over 100years old this hotel retains a quality of comfort and service that together with its unique location make it deservedly one of the Leading Hotels of the World. We first visited over 50 years ago and it was great to return. The staff are polite, willing and efficient. The service is excellent and the restaurants produced a fine dinner and breakfast. Our short stay allowed time only for a short visit to the Falls but at 6.30am close to sunrise we had the place almost to ourselves and the views were magical in the early morning light

The hotel oozes history. Vintage posters and photos in the room, hallway and lobby - everywhere you turn you get another glimpse of history! The grounds are lovely. The terrace are is perfect for afternoon tea or drinks. A nice cup of tea and a view of the mist coming off the Falls can’t be beat. The wide range of options and for breakfast means there is something for everyone oh- and the breakfast comes with bubbly! We were assigned to a room off the lobby on the ground floor with a lovely view of the garden and the antique carriage. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. The heater/ air con system was perfect and much better than the usual central heat and a/c. We encountered warthog, Bush pig, and spent a lovely early afternoon in the garden watching a group of banded mongoose. If you are looking for a historic hotel with excellent service, look no further!

I really wanted to fall in love with this decadent, colonial piece of history . . . but she is an old grand dame and the cracks are showing all around. Before I elaborate let me start with the highlights:

* Delmah, the waiter. And overall the staff is great and very well trained.
* Excellent gin tonic assortment, tea time (15.00) and food.
* The grandeur of the grounds.
* Proximity to Vic Falls ($30 to walk to the Falls via the Hotels walk way. Daytime only)
* Views of the bridge.
* After two weeks of traveling in Botswana I was able to clean up. They have a hair salon and offer blow outs, manicures etc.
* Decent gym
* That feeling of stepping back in time.
* Cute monkeys running around
* Lots go activities offered but PLEASE DO NOT DO THE ELEPHANT RIDES. This is animal cruelty & you are contributing to continued abuse & imprisonment of these animals.

The cons:

* This place needs a major overhaul - the moldings are cracked, and if you look closely at any area in the hotel you will see it is far past its glory days.
* My room had a sharp stench of humid old carpet, hidden under nauseating air fresheners.
* Helicopters flying over Vic Falls can be heard all afternoon and go over the grounds.
* This hotel is frequented by an older, very white, very stuffy clientele. To the point where I became uncomfortable with the air of arrogance, superiority, and upper crustiness. "Colonial" indeed.
* If you come from the bush or a safari this will be a bit of a culture shock.You go from authentic to pretense.

TIPS:
* You need cash to go over the border. When I traveled it was $30 for a single entry fee.
* If you book an early game drive make sure to get water the night prior. Breakfast doesn't open until 6am.
* If you want to escape the AC and breathe in fresh air, make sure you put the mosquito netting over the bed.
* Be prepared for ALOT of mosquitoes. While in the Delta in Botswana I barely got bit. Within minutes at Vic Falls I had lots of bites.
* Take shuttle or $10 taxi to see the animals gather at the watering hole at sundown at the VF Safari Lodge. Great place to go for a sundowner (gin tonic/drink).
* Bring lots of singles to tip with. US $ appreciated.
*IF you have more than one destination check the weight limit on the various international flights. They vary from airline to airline and country.
* Pack a small notebook and be ready to not always be able to use your phone.
* Thankfully Zimbabwe has a shoot to kill poachers. This is a huge problem here.
* Zimbabwe is not a safe country. Take necessary pre cautions when traveling without a guide.
* Helicopter ride and tour of Vic Falls highly recommended.
