We stayed at the Utse three separate times (October, November, and early December) and in three different rooms during our 6 week Nepal trip. Our experience was consistently great. The Utse is a wonderful refuge from a busy Kathmandu.

The staff is very friendly and helpful, they keep the place really clean, the location is convenient, the food at the attached restaurant is great. Other reviewers have already mentioned wonderful extras, like the accessible rooftop.

I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else while in Kathmandu.

We had a great stay at Utse for 10 days while we attended a nearby conference and explored the area. The staff were friendly and shared their Tibetan culture and experiences with us and kindly upgraded our room. The lack of heating made it chilly but there were plenty of blankets and the rooftop garden was an absolute suntrap, complete with sun loungers! The TV had lots of English channels and the staff were quick to repair it when the signal went at one point. The room was also very clean. It felt safe and we weren't disturbed by noise even though we overlooked the street (4th flr). Also we found that there was always hot water but here's the trick: you have to leave it on for a good 10 minutes before the heat kicks in! I think those complaining didn't realise how long it takes to heat up. The restaurant food is also delicious and you can eat your breakfast on the peaceful rooftop. This isn't the Ritz - remember that times are hard in Kathmandu and this is a small family-run business. It is a little worn around the edges but manage your expectations and let the charm, warmth and lovely decor make up for it. All in all we'd absolutely recommend Utse and will return there if ever back in Kathmandu :-)

Room Tip: 4th floor was the highest and therefore maybe the quietest away from the street

Once again we had the pleasure of staying in Hotel Utse while on another trip to wonderful Nepal! The hotel is as comfortable as ever and the staff and owners are as friendly as ever. As other reviewers say: it is an oasis of calm in the heart of Kathmandu! I strongly recommend that you stay at the Utse.

Room Tip: The rooms are quieter at the back of the upper floors.

I've arrived to Hotel Utse after a 11 days exhausting Mount Everest trekking trip, therefore this Hotel was a paradise for me, however It has some weaknesses.
Positive: very good kitchen, helpful and kind staff, who do evertything for guests. Correct rooms, and great roof teracce, location is perfect, If you'd like to stay in Thamel
Negative: rooms need some maintaince - oldies style with some lack of cleaning. Many rooms don't have window, others are too noisy, it's hard to find a right one.Towels are dirty, you do better to use your own. Hot water runs out often.
Overall I loved this Hotel, and recommend to everyone.
