Rooms are spacious , well decorated, clean, good hot showers, wifi works in the entire hotel.
The hosts are extremely nice, workers very professionals and kind. the roof top restaurant is really nice , very cozy, lots of plants, and have a great view of the monkey temple, sunsets are special, highly recommended this hote, easy for women solo travelers, its very convenient walked distance from the best restaurants and bars in the nights also!

Room Tip: ask for the top rooms are nice and new with good view !

I have stayed at the Hotel Excelsior in Kathmandu for many, many years. I would not consider staying anywhere else as the owner and staff there have always made me feel this was my home away from home in Kathmandu.
The Excelsior is a hidden jewel in Thamel, firstly as it is not on any of the main busy streets but on a quite lane near the Thamel Chowk. Secondly it has a beautiful rooftop garden that is worth the stay itself. Finally if you like Tibetan food this has one of the best Tibetan food kitchens in Kathmandu.
The rooms are clean with A/C and heat and plenty of hot water. The hotel employs its own generator so there are no interruptions during load-shedding periods.
I don't hesitate recommending this hotel to anyone.

I have visited The Excelsior for the last 22 years! That tells you that there must be something that pulls me back! This is not a 5 star rating, you can stay in a 5 star Hotel anywhere in the world, but, they don't have the character of a locally owned Hotel. The Excelsior attracts me because the owner is Tibetan with the ethics that go with it, he is warm, welcoming and so helpful. You can book trips from the Hotel and organise treks. The rooms are comfortable and recently decorated often with paintings of Nepal or Tibet. I feel at home there, any problems will be solved and there are always smiles from the people that work there, even the cleaners! There is a delightful roof garden where, weather permitting, you have a great view. Meals can be taken in the roof garden, Thukpa is my favourite! Breakfast in the dining room is freshly cooked or you can have it in your room. The situation of the Hotel is the hub of Kathmandu, there is a great early morning walk to Durbar Square and you see the vendors spreading out their wares en route, smell the spices and marvel at the clay and brass niknacs! This is real Nepal, walk to browse all the local shops, get a taxi to places like glorious Bodhinath and savour local meals from neighbouring Restaurants or at the pleasant Hotel dining room. You can buy authentic jewellery in the Hotel shop at reasonable prices too. Don't pay through the nose at one of the impersonal Hotels, stay at the Excelsior for a reasonable price and feel part of the warmth of the Tibetan and Nepalese people.

Room Tip: Have a room higher up, for the view and a bit quieter.

The location of this hotel made my stay enjoyable as the market area is just few steps away. There's also a convenient store close by, so I could quickly grab some last minute items. The staff were friendly and helpful. One thing I can't forget to mention is the beautiful rooftop garden. It became a routine thing for me to have a cup of coffee while sitting at the rooftop with a good view. The rooms were cozy with a balcony.

Had an amazing time in Kathmandu, and what made it better was my stay at Hotel Excelsior! The staff are so welcoming, friendly and very eager to help. Although the hotel has been there for a long time, the rooms are clean and well maintained. Breakfast was delicious. I especially loved for the coffee and lemon iced tea. They were in the process of building their roof top restaurant when we were there and it looked beautiful. Too bad we had to leave before it officially opened. The hotel is located in the heart of Thamel, which is a hub for tourists, and filled with shops, restaurants, bars etc. I will definitely be returning to Excelsior on my next trip!
