Make sure that you have an understanding of the culture. There are certain ways and rule that must be followed to respect the culture. Once you do you can learn a lot

Was able to take part in the fortune prayers part. It's being renovated which was actually a treat because we were able to see what the completed parts looked like and compared them to the original. A friend guided us through so it was nice to learn of each god and the traditions of the temple.

A beautiful temple situated in a crowded city. Great for admiring the majesty, and grace, or for worship. Definitely a must see

Longshan Temple was one of the first things we saw in Taipei as we needed some way to spend time before being able to check in to our hotel. Since the temple was mentioned both in our guide book as well as the tourist map we snatched from the hotel lobby we decided to have a look.

At the first sight the temple looks gorgeous, built in a very stereotypical "Chinese" way. Traditional exterior is bright in color and sports many small details one can easily spend so much time on inspecting. The yard has a nice calming man made waterfall and two ponds with koi. The two dragon pillars on the inner entrance are a treat for the eyes.

On the inside there are actually surprisingly many people actively participating in religious ceremonies with incense burning and offers given. The shrines look nice and are, again, filled with many details.

The thing I did not really enjoy is the more "plastic," tourist friendly side of the temple. Even if it might not actually make the religious meaningfulness any lesser for the people going there, the souvenir shops and the constant recorded chant played through the several speakers in the temple area give the place a slightly cheap air.

The temple is beautiful, and worth seeing, but it is also easy to notice that it is one of the most prominent sights in Taipei.

I would recommend to visit both the Taipei Confucius Temple and the Dalongdong Boan temple, for example, rather than Longshan, for both authentic and far less crowded experience.
