I was looking forward to haggling and finding some bargains but to be honest, found nothing worth buying. After walking 20 meters you have seen everything the market has to offer, it just repeats the whole time. Along with the many Go Go bars also along this street, the aim of anyone here is to see how much they can get away with ripping off the tourists. If you are looking for expensive fake belts or lighters, maybe it is worth a visit. If you are going here hoping to see any sort of Thai authenticity then you will be disappointed.

During the day Patpong is a soi (small street) that connects Suriwongse and Silom Roads.

But about 6 pm traders move in with their stalls and set up the night market. I first visited it 40 years ago, and in those days you could actually find a bargain in shirts, ties, watches, wallets and other accessories, as long as you were not too worried about the authenticity of the brand name, because all of it was pirated.

Today it is nothing but a tourist trap, overpriced, crowded, dirty and noisy.

On top of that, the street market is full of go-go bars (a euphemism for brothels) with very aggressive touts on the street who sometimes physically try to drag you into the bar.

Give it a miss.

The market is stall after stall selling the same fake goods watches, lighters, tshirts and caps. The market is surrounded by strip clubs with guys constantly harassing you to go in with the promise of a ping pong show. If you want to go to a red light district then go to Soi Cowboy more relaxed and you not harassed.

We are 3 ladies who visited on a Friday night to see the lady boys and a Ping Pong show. Various men approached us with a "menu" to invite us in for a show. We asked one about the entrance fee and on the laminated "Menu", bottom corner he pointed to "free" and said we only had to order beer. We followed him to the "Pussy Bar" and ordered 3 beers. It was a very intimidating atmosphere and we witnessed an altercation between 2 other tourists and 2 very butch managers. We quickly took a few sips and called the waitress to bring the billl but she called the 2 managers who insisted on a fee of 300 TB each for the 1st and 1 500 TB each for the 2nd, plus, plus - in total 6 000 TB. We left paying 800 TB. Instead of a disappointing evening, we reported it to the police (opposite Starbucks in main road) and they offered immediate assistance. We took them to the bar and the owner paid us back 500 TB. All trust restored. We are thankful.

Not the best night market, not the best atmosphere, not the friendliest people - it’s iconic but frankly doesn’t have a lot else going for it. Better night market choices available unless you are genuinely wanting to see what can be done with ping pong balls...
