Do yourself a favour and take a trip down the Klongs of Bangkok , another way of getting around using water taxis with the throng of Thai people.

An hour boat tour along the river gives an interesting perspective of the local culture. There are even "road signs" along the way!

The Klong Taxis are not for the faint of heart or spirit. They are dirty, noisy and hot. However, they do afford quick access to out of the way parts of the city and keep you out of traffic jams. There is staff that hangs on the edges of the boat that will come around and take your fare in cash, just tell them where you plan to get off. You can google Bangkok Klong Boats and view a map of the routes to plan your travel.

Be very careful when getting in and out of the boats as they move about in the wake of the water and many people have fallen into the Klong...YOU DON'T WANT TO DO THIS! The water is basically a toilet, avoid exposure at all costs, including while in the boat. Spry will come up and blow into the boat if you are sitting on an end seat. There are plastic curtains that you can pull up and block any spray from getting on you. Get up some courage and go for it, it is the cheapest way to get around and has been a travel staple in the Kingdom for decades.

Guided tour via boat of markets and food vendors setup along side, and within, a group of interweaving canals. Try as much of the food as you can, delicious. Shopping for souvenirs may be less expensive here if the item is unique. If item is very common, you can find them anywhere in town just as easy. Bargain for any and all items. Food price is set, though.

I use canal taxis to get around Bangkok. They offer a quick and cheap way to get around. I use the boat taxi to get to Khao san road from downtown Bangkok or to get to central world. What are the draw backs? Can be over crowded in the mornings, they are dangerous. I see children, e;lderly, and pregnant women using the boats, so it can be done. Just be mindful and never take any risks. The boats move fast and therefore people often get on and off quickly. there is no rioom for error, The boats can slam into the docks so watch where you step. To get to khao san road, I tell the boatperson where I am going and they charge me an amount not exeeding 18 baht. A map will help you navigate where you are and each dock has the namer of the street. It takes two boats to get to khao san road. I change boats at Asok. Keep your ticket in case you are asked fot it. Be careful of the dirty klong water. I wear sunglasses and cover my mouth, Crossing boats can splash you.
