Having heard of Jean Michel Lorrain by close family friends in France, we were extremely happy to learn by those same friends they were opening a restaurant in Bangkok where we went for a WE.
We were among the first patrons, J'aime being opened only for a couple of weeks.
The restaurant is in a beautiful hotel in Bangkok, outside of the hustle of the city. We called them and ask them to give instructions to our taxi driver and he found the place easily.
We had a romantic dinner and truly enjoyed the food. We had the degustation menu, which was perfect to discover the extensive offer. I'm allergice to seafood and they nicely adapted all the menu to accomodate this and proposed me perfect alternative, including some not even on the menu. The wine pairing was fine and the service really attentive.

My better half were told of a great new French restaurant in Bangkok, and since we were actually on our way there, we decided to book. Little did we know that we would be attending one of the first, if not the first, dinner services for J'aime, and that the hotel it was in, the U Sathon, wasn't even open for guests yet, so the taxi driver had no idea where it was. Luckily, we had a friend who lives in Bangkok, who spoke a little Thai, and with the help of Google Maps, we managed to find it after several U-turns.

The deco was quite impressive with a lot of marble and glass, but we didn't exactly get the supposedly "upside down" theme. For us, it was a bit neo-retro, with a touch kitsch throw in. It wasn't bad at all, but it wasn't want we were expecting.

The first thing that was explained to us was that J'aime will take an Asian twist and adopt a family style approach, where everyone at the table is expected to share all the plates. It was a bit strange for the French restaurant, but we were up for it. However, we made the mistake of not ordering the tasting menu - because we wanted to try a couple of things not included - also we weren't sure if we could finish the dozen or so items on it.

I started alone with the lobster bisque, which was light and frothy. We then shared two appetisers - razor clams and oyster in red wine jelly, both very good. We chose the lobster and chicken with wild mushrooms for main courses. All the food was good, particularly the starters. The razor clam were prepared perfectly, sweet and tender and served with a host of purees and mousses, and slices of market fresh young vegetables. The oysters, enclosed inside the red wine jelly, were pretty great, still tasted sea fresh. The main courses were good too, well prepared and tasty, but not spectacularly so. We then shared an order of dessert.

The whole experience was nice enough.

What struck me as odd - no pun intended - is the fact that all the dishes came in threes. There were three razor clams, three oyster sets, and so on. For a high-end restaurant that wants everyone on the table to share, three is either a crowd, or one short. We shared the third pieces of our appetizers with no problem, but it could be a bit awkward if, say, we were on the first date, or if we were in a business meeting. Even the dessert order came with three different types, which were not so easy to share.

Obviously, ordering the tasting menu would have solved all this, but why the number 3 when it comes down to the a la carte menu. For the razor clams, it might have been a little difficult to serve three pieces in two shells, but there was definitely no reason why the oysters could not have been plated for two rather than serve as three portions.

Overall, we had a good time, the food was excellent, and the service was friendly and capable, but I can't helped but wonder if there are still kinks in the system to work out.

Dear Tony C,

Greetings from J’AIME by Jean-Michel Lorain at U Sathorn Bangkok.
May I begin by thanking you for taking the time and trouble to write a review of your experience at J’AIME and say how delighted we were to welcome you as one of our very first guests.
Your kind comments regarding your satisfaction with your meal are deeply appreciated and I will pass them on personally to Chef Amerigo.

One point you raised for which I would like to offer my sincere apologies is the apparent confusion over the unique “sharing” concept we employ at J’AIME.

We want all our guests to enjoy all aspects of their meal but possibly have a particular “favourite” which is why you were served with dishes in threes, even though there were only two of you. This gives the opportunity for individual diners, if they especially enjoy an item, to have an extra portion available to indulge in as opposed to looking longingly at their fellow diner’s plate wishing they could have more. For other combinations of diners we do serve a different number of plates, depending on the group size. Hence our “sharing” concept when extra portions are readily available for your enjoyment.

I hope that my explanation clarifies matters and would like to end by saying that we hope you have the opportunity to dine with us again in the very near future when you will be assured a very warm J’AIME welcome.
