BaanBooLOo was one of four hotels we enjoyed during our recent trip to Thailand. We had the pleasure of spending four nights in this urban oasis. This was the least expensive place we stayed, but the MOST personal attention and culturally rewarding experience of our entire trip. For comparison, we splurged $1200/night at Six Senses Samui, which was obviously very nice...but dollar for dollar BaanBooLOo offers unparalleled value and personal service. Adisak and Ohn (owner and operator, respectively) are quintessential "gentle souls" who exemplify the hospitality of the Thai people.

The lush garden setting is ideally located within the walls of the old city in the heart of Chiang Mai. The setting is on a quite street just a short walk from Wat Phra Singh, a central temple landmark in Chiang Mai. It's extremely easy and safe to get everywhere in the city from this guest house. (Note: the Sunday Walking Street is a very short walk and well worth booking your stay to be there over a Sunday night).

The BaanBooLOo ambiance is casual and provides ample privacy, even when the property is fully booked. Guests come and go on their own schedule, yet Adi and Ohn always seem to be present in the garden to greet you in the morning and upon return at the end of the day. Each night, they take the time to ask about your day, answer questions about Thai culture, and help plan the following day (if you want help). Ohn even booked a car hire for us and translated the day's itinerary to the driver for several points outside the city (elephant camp, Doi Suthep temple, craft village, pottery studios, etc). Adi and Ohn want to maximize the experience for every guest.

The highlight of our stay was the Thai cooking class offered by Ohn. It's a private time for couples or family to participate in the preparation of a special meal tailored to the guest's diet preferences. Ohn gives everyone simple preparation tasks while she demonstrates and explains the ingredients, aesthetics, and techniques involved in traditional Thai dishes. As the three-course meal comes together, she sets the table for a romantic dinner then quietly recedes to allows her guests to enjoy a romantic dinner. We had no expectation going in, but the night turned out to be one of those evening we will talk about and remember for the rest of our lives.

BaanBooLOo is a must see for any Chiang Mai visitor. I could carry on trying to articulate all the merits of this property, but you really need to experience it to appreciate just how special this place is. My wife and I hope to return some day when our children are older. This is a special place that provides an incomparable experience behind and unassuming facade. Book it!

Arriving in Chang Mai without any reservations for accommodations was all part of our plan (or lack there of), and having previously read reviews and speaking with a couple we know who had stayed at BaanBooLOo in the past we knew it would be worth checking out. Alas, after checking online we saw that they were pretty well booked up, but we figured we may as well stop in and see if there was a last minute cancellation.

Fresh of the plane with our packs in tow we hopped in a cab to find this little gem. After navigated a few quite, windy neighborhood streets our cab driver pulled up to a gate. We were immediately welcomed by Adisak, whom we soon discovered was the owner. Inviting us in and immediately offering us cool papaya juice and fresh fruit, Adi asked how he could help us. We inquired if there happened to be any openings for the evening, or any of the three (all too brief) nights that we were going to be in Chang Mai. Informing us that there was an opening for that evening that was scooped up not five minutes before our arrival he asked what what type of accommodation we were looking for. Looking around at our calm and serene surroundings my girlfriend Catherine and I looked at each other and said "Ideally something like this". Chuckling, Adi informed us that BaanBooLOo was somewhat of a unique place in Chang Mai, but that he thought he could help us out.

A few minutes and a phone call or two later he had found us a place (great in its own right) just a few blocks away. We inquired if there was any chance that he had any openings at all while were were in town, and as luck would have it, he had one opening that fell on our last night in town. We immediately took it. Chatting with Adi for a bit while taking a much appreciated respite from the mid day heat we knew we had found someplace truly special. Not only was Adi and the team incredibly kind and welcoming three nights later during our stay, but welcoming us in when we didn't even have reservations and were simply asking his advice on where to find other lodging showed true hospitality.

I simply can not say how much we enjoyed our stay there, even if it was for only one night. It was definitely our favorite placed we stayed the entire two weeks we where in Thailand, and in fact, is quite possibly the most welcoming, friendly, and peaceful place I have ever stayed. It was an exceptional experience from our first meeting with Adi, until the morning of our departure. An experience that I would highly recommend to anyone, and one that I look forward to repeating in the (hopefully) not distant future.

We recently stayed at BaanBooLoo for the whole of our trip to Chiang Mai province (11 days). The food was exquisite - cooked by Orn and her staff - and the ambience of the traditional Thai rooms (with open air bath & shower) set the scene for an authentic Thai experience. On our last day Orn and Adi lit a paper lantern that ascended into the sky like a star - it is a traditional ritual - about letting go. Adissak has created an amazing and beautiful place in a city of beautiful Thai people. We loved our rides in the tutt-tutt! Helen and Gail

A peaceful and beautiful setting about a stone's throw from some of the busiest attractions in Chiang Mai makes this B&B a rare find. The owner and staff were well-informed, friendly and eager to make the trip as enjoyable and easy as possible for us. Among other things, they arranged for transport, massages, suggested places to eat and shop and made all the reservations necessary. We stayed in a treehouse which was traditionally and gorgeously furnished and very comfortable. The breakfast was simple but healthy and delicious. They offer cooking and massage classes, which we didn't try, but some of the other guests clearly enjoyed those too. The only negative we can recall is a minor one: energy and water conservation is clearly important to the owner which is great, but it was odd to find a tub in the room but not enough hot water to fill it. Overall, it's a bit pricey but an absolute gem. Very strongly recommended.

Wonderful experience both in terms of the peace and quietness as on the scenery and accommodation. Baan Boo Loo is a great traditional stay in a city that has been overtaken by tourist eager entrepreneurs and international brands.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A unique small Thai country village style guesthouse with surrounding wooden villas, hammocks, country garden, outdoor lounges with lots of arts and wood carvings. Visitors should be aware that this is a very natural setting. There are many kinds of creatures in the gardens Some bathrooms are semi open air and mosquitos are omnipresent as in the most part of Chiang Mai. We use mosquito netting in bedrooms as well as using air-conditioning, fans and mosquito repellents and creams free of charge. Guests are advised to wear loose fitting clothing with long sleeves and leg coverings in the early mornings and early evenings or to use a good strength anti mosquito spray. Sunny daytimes are mostly mosquito free. Hard to believe but BaanBooLOo Village seems completely cut off from the noise of the city centre yet is only 15 minutes from Chiang Mai International Airport. It is without question the quietest location in all of central Chiang Mai. We are in the central historic Old City Inner Moat area just 5 minutes walk from the major landmark Wat Pra Singh temple known by all in Chiang Mai. We provide a comprehensive and hearty Thai and International breakfast from 7am until 10am. We do cater for early start breakfasts and special dietary needs. Guests are recommended to discuss any special needs upon check-in. We have a quiet policy after 10pm as these are wooden houses and respect for neighbours is paramount. We also have an outdoor late lounge area with music and drinks until around midnight which is separate from guest rooms to avoid sleep disturbance. There are late night bars, jazz club and eateries all within 20 minutes walk or a short tuk tuk ride for around 100 baht. Most venues are open until around 1am. A handful are open until the early hours. Our concierge service includes helping guests to plan activities/spas/trekking plus advice on events in and around the city. This service is impartial and is included in the room charge. We would never recommend tourist service companies with animal cruelty reputations. BaanBooLOo Village is a 'green' environmentally friendly organisation evolving gradually. Our long term goal is to create a green oasis in the form of a living museum in the historic old city walls. ... more   less
