Arriving in Chang Mai without any reservations for accommodations was all part of our plan (or lack there of), and having previously read reviews and speaking with a couple we know who had stayed at BaanBooLOo in the past we knew it would be worth checking out. Alas, after checking online we saw that they were pretty well booked up, but we figured we may as well stop in and see if there was a last minute cancellation.

Fresh of the plane with our packs in tow we hopped in a cab to find this little gem. After navigated a few quite, windy neighborhood streets our cab driver pulled up to a gate. We were immediately welcomed by Adisak, whom we soon discovered was the owner. Inviting us in and immediately offering us cool papaya juice and fresh fruit, Adi asked how he could help us. We inquired if there happened to be any openings for the evening, or any of the three (all too brief) nights that we were going to be in Chang Mai. Informing us that there was an opening for that evening that was scooped up not five minutes before our arrival he asked what what type of accommodation we were looking for. Looking around at our calm and serene surroundings my girlfriend Catherine and I looked at each other and said "Ideally something like this". Chuckling, Adi informed us that BaanBooLOo was somewhat of a unique place in Chang Mai, but that he thought he could help us out.

A few minutes and a phone call or two later he had found us a place (great in its own right) just a few blocks away. We inquired if there was any chance that he had any openings at all while were were in town, and as luck would have it, he had one opening that fell on our last night in town. We immediately took it. Chatting with Adi for a bit while taking a much appreciated respite from the mid day heat we knew we had found someplace truly special. Not only was Adi and the team incredibly kind and welcoming three nights later during our stay, but welcoming us in when we didn't even have reservations and were simply asking his advice on where to find other lodging showed true hospitality.

I simply can not say how much we enjoyed our stay there, even if it was for only one night. It was definitely our favorite placed we stayed the entire two weeks we where in Thailand, and in fact, is quite possibly the most welcoming, friendly, and peaceful place I have ever stayed. It was an exceptional experience from our first meeting with Adi, until the morning of our departure. An experience that I would highly recommend to anyone, and one that I look forward to repeating in the (hopefully) not distant future.

We recently stayed at BaanBooLoo for the whole of our trip to Chiang Mai province (11 days). The food was exquisite - cooked by Orn and her staff - and the ambience of the traditional Thai rooms (with open air bath & shower) set the scene for an authentic Thai experience. On our last day Orn and Adi lit a paper lantern that ascended into the sky like a star - it is a traditional ritual - about letting go. Adissak has created an amazing and beautiful place in a city of beautiful Thai people. We loved our rides in the tutt-tutt! Helen and Gail

Room Tip: They are all good!

A peaceful and beautiful setting about a stone's throw from some of the busiest attractions in Chiang Mai makes this B&B a rare find. The owner and staff were well-informed, friendly and eager to make the trip as enjoyable and easy as possible for us. Among other things, they arranged for transport, massages, suggested places to eat and shop and made all the reservations necessary. We stayed in a treehouse which was traditionally and gorgeously furnished and very comfortable. The breakfast was simple but healthy and delicious. They offer cooking and massage classes, which we didn't try, but some of the other guests clearly enjoyed those too. The only negative we can recall is a minor one: energy and water conservation is clearly important to the owner which is great, but it was odd to find a tub in the room but not enough hot water to fill it. Overall, it's a bit pricey but an absolute gem. Very strongly recommended.

Wonderful experience both in terms of the peace and quietness as on the scenery and accommodation. Baan Boo Loo is a great traditional stay in a city that has been overtaken by tourist eager entrepreneurs and international brands.

This rustic little slice of paradise is a perfect refuge from the busyness of downtown Chiang Mai. Located a block from the most magnificent temple in the city, and in the heart of the "old town" this is a special place. It is special mostly because of the owners and staff. There are only a few rooms and each is unique, designed for natural ventilation, openness but with privacy. It is set up as a traditional Thai style home, with outdoor (but covered) dining, incredible bathrooms that are luxurious in a very natural weigh (wood and stone). Most units have AC, but we found it was not really needed, except for an hour or so just before bed.

This is a great alternative for folks who want a more "authentic" experience, but short of a true homestay. The staff is well trained, extremely polite and genuinely wanting you to have a great experience. The food they serve is fresh, healthy and a nice blend of traditional and modern (Thai soup for breakfast, but enjoy the pancakes also!) It is not full service, but its perfect because the city offers so many food options.

One of the owners who is very involved is also a devotee of sustainable living (yoga, gardening, massage, natural building etc) so if you have a more holistic living perspective, this place is perfect. My wife did a full day Yoga/Thai massage training in the new open air building, and it was quite reasonable.
But don't be mistaken, its not a hippy hideout by any stretch. This is great for romantic couples, families or single folks. Just don't come there hoping for late night parties, or a modern "luxury" resort.

Finally, we have two young kids. The staff doted on them, and treated them like their own. For us, this put them in the 5 star category, as your experience traveling with kids has a lot to do with how they feel on any given day. The kids loved Baan Boo Loo, and did not want to leave.

Thanks to all at Baan Boo Loo for making Chiang Mai on our new favorites list of places to return.

Room Tip: The front rooms have AC, but the rice barn in the back of the property is open air. It's a great luxury "tree house" experience for the more adventurous. It still has a gorgeous bathroom and deep bath. Also deep sense of history. Just be ready for a few mosquitoes. The bed has a big mosquito net, so you sleep peacefully.
