Reviewed 19 June 2018

essentially just a gate with two walls but so much history has been going on with this place. it's also the start of the sunday market. stop here for a quick photo, but beware of the pigeons

The gate is worth the visit, looks like its been restored, rebuilt. But you do get a scense of what it would have been like in the past. Pidgeons everywhere if your interested in feeding them you can purchase seed of the locals at the gate. Directly oposite walking street (sunday) if you need a landmark.

We made a mission of seeing all the gates to old town in Chiang Mai, worth it, as you walk along the moat you can see all the gates - including the Tha Phae Gate - and the corners of the ancient moat wall. They are all beautiful and worth-while seeing.

We passed the Tha Phae Gate several times during our 5-day stay in Chiang Mai. We noticed that it's full of people at night when the temperature is cooler. We came late afternoon and the tourists were having fun feeding the pigeons. We had nothing to feed them, yet a pigeon still landed on my husband's shoulder for a photo opp:)))

Chiang Mai's old city is surrounded by a moat, the remnants of old city walls and several old city gates. This single eastern gate is by far the best gate with a large pedestrian courtyard where tourists feed flocks of pigeons -- other gates are traffic/road way entrances. This gate leads to the major east/west artery of the old city.

The old wall and gates are interesting but not exciting ... we've sometimes see people swimming (or at least in) the nearby moat. That's interesting but I'd not venture into those murky waters!
