“WORST EXPERIENCE ON OUR HONEYMOON”
Reviewed 24 April 2011

I would like to preface this critique by stating that if you read my other reviews, you will find i am quite easy to please and often give glowing reviews. The average hotel rating I give is at least a 4, if not a 5. My experience at Viethouse Lodge was so horrible, however, that I basically feel obligated to warn others of the unfriendliness of this place. I am shocked that anyone could have possibly ever given this place a 4 or 5 star review!
My husband and I visited the Viethouse Lodge during our honeymoon through
Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. Halong Bay was supposed to be the major highlight of the trip, and yet It turned out to be the worst experience of our entire honeymoon.
Although there was mold and larva growing on the ceiling (see photos), bars on all the windows, stains on the cushions, mold on all the bathroom appliances, and at times no running water, the worst part of our experience at the Viethouse Lodge were the incredibly unfriendly and unhelpful owners of the lodge. They seemed put out by our questions, gave us incorrect tourist information, and acted as though we were a huge bother to them. We did not feel welcome. Our room and bathroom were both dirty and had a horrible mold problem.
Also, we were scammed by the driver they recommended and hired for us.
I have traveled all over the world to Africa, India, North/Central/South America, Europe and Asia. I can say, without a doubt, that this was one of the WORST hotel experiences I've ever had.

Having experienced wonderful hospitality at our well-equipped hotel in Hanoi for the same price, we did not get a similar welcome here unfortunately. A little more attention to detail, especially given the very cold, wet weather we experienced, would have been good. The restaurant area was cold. There was a log-burning fire which the owners and their friends were using in the evening. It would have been nice if they had offered us at least an electric heater beside our table while we were having dinner. The heater in our room did not work so we asked for an electric heater. This made little impact and we had to put on a lot of clothes and request a second quilt to stay warm in bed. The poor weather meant we were looking for alternative entertainment but there were no English channels on the TV and the WIFI didn't work in our room. There was an option to rent a DVD player and DVDs. The bathroom was very basic. Soap in a dispenser is provided but nothing else and there is no complimentary bottled water. You have to buy that from the mini bar. We found that rather unusual in a country where you can’t drink the tap water. Hot water for the shower was plentiful thank goodness. This hotel is probably great when the weather is good and there are more guests but the circumstances we found ourselves in left us less than thrilled.

A perfect place for a few days peace and quiet, with views of the bay, green surroundings, an attractive pool and excellent food. It's also very good value. We loved our time here.
Don't come here expecting shopping and nightlife - this a quiet corner for winding down in.

We stayed 2 nights with my Mother in law and 2 young children. The hotel is siuated on Tuan Chau island which can be reached by a causeway joining it to the mainland. The hotel is very unique - old and beautiful Vietnamese architecture - a welcome change from bland chain hotels! There are beautiful views of the bay from the dining room and terraces.
The owners and staff are very helpful (they love babies!) and helped us organise our own private boat trip of Halong bay at an excellent price - even driving us to and from the dock!
Great food too in their restaurant. Rooms are a little basic but clean and adequate - mosquito nets a nice touch - my 2 year old son loved "camping".
P.S. One tip - the credit card machine can play up so take cash!!

Having been to Halong Bay many times over the years on leisure trips, it is always a delight to find this boutique hotel and it's welcoming staff at the end of a long journey to Halong. Its beautiful placement on an island, called Tuan Chau, always rewards me with wonderful views over the bay. Most impressive is the traditional architecture of the hotel, which is based on the native Hmong Style and its artistic decorations. It is very much a charming hotel that strives through it's personal service and a design so unlike all other hotels you will find in Vietnam. The owners, a wonderful couple from Germany, are forever helpful (they both speak english, vietnamese and german, of course!) and entertaining!

I have always been the happiest on my way to them, knowing exactly I will be spoiled by their hospitality, excellent food and the nature that surrounds them!

I cannot wait to return next year!
