A friend of mine and I happened upon this hostel while on a 2-month backpacking trip throughout Southeast Asia. We took a shared bus from the airport and, once we arrived in Hanoi, met a member of the staff. Normally leery of accepting the first accommodation that came to us, we were exhausted and decided to just trust take a chance. We were not disappointed.

First of all, we paid the price that we were looking for ($10 for the two of us) and had a massive room with aircon - a must in Vietnam - large beds and a bathroom. But that doesn't begin to describe how great of an experience we had.

As soon as we arrived, we joined some fellow guests in the lobby for an unbelievable all you can eat (and drink) dinner with the owners of the Hostel. They offered this to all of their guests, every night, FREE OF CHARGE. The food was fantastic and the owners of the hostel could not be any friendlier and more welcoming. An Australian staying there told us that they also cooked lunch if you were interested - but we were never near enough to the hostel during the middle of the day to verify that.

We had run into problems getting out of Laos and our schedule got thrown off but, lo and behold, the owner of the hostel was also a travel agent. She sat down with us and helped us to plan the rest of the trip for us. She arranged a trip to Halong Bay, called airlines, hostels and friends in other cities to make sure that we could have a great trip the rest of the way. All of the recommendations and arrangements panned out and, (you'll soon be sensing a theme) everything was free of charge. We even got better prices on the Halong Bay trip than everyone else on our boat!

Another little anecdote. While in Laos, my friend had broken has camera after falling through a wooden bridge. We mentioned this in passing to the staff of the hostel and, without missing a beat, drove us to a camera store that we never would have found and negotiated a fantastic price for us. On our final day in Hanoi, we had a bus to catch in the afternoon. The plan was to return from Ha Long Bay, go pick up my friend's camera, grab dinner and then head off to the bus to Hue. Unfortunately, our bus from Ha Long Bay was ridiculously late and by the time the bus arrived, we had missed our bus. The owner of the hostel was waiting for us outside like a worried mother when we got back and saved the day. She sent her brother to the camera store to pick up the newly-fixed camera, she cooked us a dinner to go and then called the bus while we picked up our bags. As soon as her brother came back with the camera (which was perfectly fixed) he borrowed a friend's car and we literally chased down the bus - which was already 30 minutes into its drive. They called the bus to have it pull over and they let us on, fixed camera and warm dinner in hand. All of this, of course, was free of charge (though we tipped them immensely).

This was by far the best service that I have received at any hotel in the world (and that includes stays in many 5-star hotels). The service here was unparalleled and truly made our trip. I would recommend this accommodation to any person that wants to see the meaning of true hospitality. They lived up to their name as a "Family Hostel".

When you get there, be sure to look at the wall of photos and flags from happy backpackers (and be sure to look for our picture with the American flag)!

the hanoi family hostel is a good place located in the middle of hanoi a stone throw from the nlocal markets and super close to lots of eaterys.
the rooms are neet and tidy with a small fridge sattelite tv and air con, my room unfortunantly didnt have a widow though.
its a child friendly hostel with no unexpected surprises.
the free internet is a big bonus too...
dont be fooled this is good but basic accomodation it has everything you need but it is not fancy. for 12-15 US dollars a night you cant expect more but you will be happy with what you get....
