This is a very good choice for Hanoi stays. I'm a longstanding visitor to Vietnam, and of the various mid-price hotels I know well, I rate this one very highly. The location is Hang Gai, the busy long street full of popular silk shops in what's called the Old Quarter. This is emphatically NOT one of the noisy, nasty, cheap Old Quarter hotels: Golden Silk is totally different - very comfortable, well run, charmingly friendly and helpful staff, level of spoken English excellent. Safe for a woman travelling solo. The rooms vary, I gather: mine was big and very well appointed, with a charming terrace. I stayed for several weeks - business. But I can imagine it as an ideal choice for tourists. The street's heavy traffic can be coped with: taxis have to stop on the far side opposite the hotel, but the staff are good at helping clients cross safely. But do note: when exiting a car or taxi, you should walk the few steps along the street to the nearest traffic light. Don't dive into the flow of traffic as locals do: better safe than sorry.

Room Tip: My top floor room was spacious, good views.

Front Desk staff where very friendly and helpful, money exchange is easy to do with them in either USD or Dong.
We were in Room 307 it had a King bed which was very comfortable it also has a great balcony to watch the street below, however the room can be a bit noisey from the street and the hallway as the doors close very heavily,
The room has no ironing facility not sure if you could request it. It does have the basic complementary toiletries if you have forgotten anything.
Good buffet breakfast selection.
It is in a great location for exploring the old quarter, walking it the best way to get around and you are very close to all the major spots.

We are currently staying at Golden Silk hotel in the Terrace suite room. Reading other reviews it would seem rooms do differ?
We are very happy with our room it is very large with a great view from the terrace.
Bathroom is also more than adequate with amenities and toiletries replaced every day.
Breakfast is great also. We have used roof top bar and restaurant also, food and drink excellent!
Staff are always friendly and helpful.
Location is excellent, we have walked everywhere.
It is our first stop on a 6 week holiday in south east Asia and we are very happy!
Would certainly recommend our room 705.

We really liked this hotel, stayed there three nights. The location was great, walking distance of the Red River, the lake and lots of silk shops. The room was average size for a boutique hotel, not as small as some, and pleasantly decorated. The bathroom was nicely appointed, although the plug/sink didn't drain unless you lifted the plug, which seemed to be endemic throughout the country. It also was short on places to put your sponge bag where it wouldn't get wet when you shower, but this applies to almost every hotel I've stayed in recently. Our room had a window onto the stair well, so if you like daylight, ask for a room facing out. Breakfast provided a good range of choices, although they could have been prompter refilling tea and coffee - these were available on the buffet, so not really a problem. We visited the rooftop bar, which had great views of the city, and the staff were delightful - a signpost might be helpful though! The spa was excellent, and a healthy discount made the prices competitive with all the others in the area. A distinct plus that they use Dermalogica products. I'd stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for an outward-facing room - maybe at the back
