Visited with our guide, he took us through the history of the prison, built by the French in 1896, intended to hold 450 prisoners, male and female, by the 1930s the number had risen to 2,000 mainly political prisoners, that endured horrifying torture, check out the guillotine.
During the Vietnam/American war the prison was used for downed American pilots, most notable was John McCain, during this period the prison was named Hanoi Hilton.
Most of the prison was demolished in 1997 to make way for new buildings.
its well worth a visit.

Showed the shocking brutality of early 20th century French rule. But it is a shame that pictures showing a holiday camp atmosphere for American POWs makes you doubt the veracity of other exhibits. Well worth seeing despite this.

This prison museum chronicles the treatment of political prisoners through the history of Vietnam including the French era and through the Vietnam war. We went through on our own - likely you would get a lot more out of it with a guide.
