The first stop on my solo, ” Around the World ”, journey was the Spring Hotel, HCMC, Vietnam and an excellent choice it turned out to be. Not only was the staff friendly and helpful, they noted from my passport that my birthday fell during my stay. Imagine my surprise when I was greeted with flowers and birthday greetings so far from home.

The hotel, in District 1, is very reasonably priced and well cared for. My room was clean and comfortable and there is a roof-top sitting area/garden not to be missed, especially the night view. Breakfast is included in the room charge and was more than enough food to get one started for a day of seeing the city. Computers are handy to the dining area with free internet access.

The reception desk provides a HCMC map and much of what I wanted to see was within walking distance of the Spring. Walk 1 1/2 blocks to Dong Khoi, turn left and you find a pleasant street, full of shops, that leads to the Saigon River. Go right and shortly the Cathedral is before you with the beautiful old post office to your right. There you can send post cards home and find treasures in the gift shops just inside the door. The Ben Thanh Market is walkable from the hotel but , finding HCMC traffic daunting, I usually took a cab. The market has everything...just go and enjoy the adventure.

Leaving HCMC, I took an all day tour of the Cu Chi Tunnels and Cao Dai Temple . The arrangements for the trip were taken care of by the Spring Hotel staff. The Cu Chi Tunnels are a window into the Vietnam War experience. The Cao Dai Temple is a remarkable piece of architecture with highly decorated columns, beautiful tile floors and , if timed right, you can enjoy a singing service accompanied by traditional Vietnamese instruments.

For those of you who are curious, the rest of my journey included Phnom Penh, Cambodia; Chennai, India; Nairobi, Kenya; Bolzano, Italy then home.

Bedroom had no windows but great aircon and was really quiet which in a bustling city like this is a blessing. As we only slept there this was no problem. Staff were extremely helpful and we were always greeted with welcome home at the end of our busy sightseesing days.

This hotel is simple but with very nice French architectural influences. It's cheap, but you can find cheaper...but why would you. The girl who greeted us on arrival had the biggest, wamest smile in Vietnam, and that's saying something. She knew who we were, she apologized for our room not being ready due to the previous guests not checking out on time but gave us the use of another room while we waited - we dumped our luggage and headed out to explore the surrounding areas. The room we were temporarily given was 702...it is quite tiny and smells of stale smoke but otherwise was spotless. By the time we returned, they'd moved our luggage to 205, a 1 bedroom suite which has a bedroom plus lounge that we had converted into our daughter's bedroom. It is clean and very spacious and cost us around US$94 per night.

We had no problems with anything, any questions were efficiently answered by the staff; organising tours, general advice about the area, arranging taxis, even arranging for a refund from the tour operator when they failed to return us to the hotel after the trip and put us in a dodgy cab instead.

It's not a destination hotel, there's not a lot to do in it, the views aren't great (although I had a lot of fun taking pictures of the grotty apartments out the back)...but it makes a great base to run your adventure from. Minibar prices are realistic, there was some dogs barking late both nights but they shut up pretty quickly and we slept soundly.

Wonderful hotel. Gorgeous. Clean. Friendly staff. Central to everything. Staff were terrific with kids. We had a 2 bedroom suite (king + 2singles) - 3rd floor, at the back of the hotel so relatively quiet. A little street noise - drowned out by air conditioner. Separate bathroom with shower and bath and plenty of hot water. Room very clean and well appointed; complete with chandeliers!

Stayed in 2 different rooms at Spring Hotel. Both rooms were large and good value. The bathroom was small but had excellent hot water supply. The building was very attractive. Free internet computers available in the lobby.
The breakfast choices were generous and tasty. No free water or tea and coffee making were provided in the room though there was a bar downstairs for drinks and meals.
The location was excellent being a short walk to markets and shops and restaurants yet our room/s were quiet.
The staff were very helpful and cooperative - we changed our plans and altered the dates we would stay at the hotel but this was not a problem for them. They provided advice about and booked tours. They always had a smile and welcome and seemed to remember which room all the guests were in.
I would recommend this hotel
