We were based in this area and there was so much to do and see that we did not explore any other area. There is something for everyone – so many sites, religious buildings (not just Muslim), cafés/restaurants, shopping, green space for children, view of the Bosporus and several sites for those who like to go off-the beat-path.

In the last few years, there has been a lot said about the safety in Turkey especially after the attempted military coup in 2016. This area is so safe, at night you could see children playing around Sultanahmet Square and there was a lot of police presence and some military presence too.

Even if you do not have an itinerary, you will find plenty of things to interest you; in the mornings I had a planned itinerary and the afternoon, I would explore the area and find new things or find new routes to get to places.

This is a great area to explore. Start at an easy landmark and make your way around. Safe, good police presence, and lots to see. Great green spaces, and decent street food. Easy to do on your own

Spectacular mosque - one of the finest I have seen.
Followed by a sumptuous turkish bath in the middle of the mayhem that is the Grand Bazaar. If you have not experienced a turkish bath - you must!
You will never forget it. Right outside the window where I received a final massage were ambulances, the mosque call to prayer as well as shouting from the Grand Bazaar-a wonderfully chaotic turkish experience!

Sultanahamet is the most touristic area of Istanbul, almost all the major attractions are located there, strolling without destination is the best way to visit.
Lose yourself in the alleys around the Grand Bazaar and dine in the numerous typical taverns

Excellent district to stay at. I recommend staying at a hotel in this district so that you can be close to the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, the Cistern, Topkappi and the Grand Bazaar. There are many Arab tourists in this area so as a Westerner you can get to know people from all around the Middle East, which is very cool and different than what most Western tourists may be used to.
