I felt it was worth going out to the desert to tour a few castles. I mostly liked the stark exterior - with no tourists and no plants around. Exploring the inside made me feel like an explorer, but it made me feel like no one cared about the upkeep of the place- people have made graffiti and probably done some damage.

This "Desert castle" stands up 65 km far from Amman, on the road that goes to east, towards iraqi borders. Very isolated in a dry plane, its state of conservation is very good. Few tourists here, you can visit it for your own for a very cheap fare. It has square plant and an inner courtyard, and 2 floors. If you have to choose which castles to see, choose this and Qusayr Amra absolutely. There aren't art pieces inside but you can appreciate the architecture of the building, that was constructed in the VII-VIII a.C. century. You can come here in taxi from Amman for 40-50 jod (tour of 3 castles, 5 hours), if you haven't a car

This castle is actually pretty well maintained and you can walk through it. It is located quite a drive from Amman but combined with another site, it is worth the visit. We stayed in Jordan for 8 days and this was easily achieved, if you are here on a 4-5 day visit, best go for the Jordanian highlights. We thoroughly enjoyed the site and the trip to get there.

We spent about 1/2 day driving throughout the desert and hit 3 different ruins. This was most interesting but still didn't seem like a must do unless you have an extra 1/2 day.

Worth noting, we were there in April and we were the only guests at this ruin as well as the other 2 which made it a bit surreal and almost creepy. Not sure if it's always that empty but definitely seemed strange.

You will definitely need a car to get there, so make this castle part of a major visit to several other desert castles in the area.

It is one of the biggest and best preserved castles in Jordan. Sadly no facilities or any touristic promotion of it. It will be like visiting a haunted castle, or a place forgotten in history books.

Still worth a visit though.
