I had a Mediterranean lunch at Maki – Salhiya. My main is Tartufo Freekeh, which is Freekeh with desert truffles. This is a newly added item on the menu with my drink of Rose Lemonade. Maki caters for vegetarian diners with 11 vegan super healthy dishes. Freekeh with desert truffles is an enjoyable salad. This main has 2 types of mushrooms and the rare desert truffles. The mushrooms are the elegant Golden needle mushroom (with white cap) and the Shiitake mushrooms. Freekeh is my favorite grain; because it is super healthy- Freekeh is a smoky grain that can easily be used in place of rice to provide an earthier flavor to dishes. Desert truffles or The Terfeziaceae, resemble small round potatoes, SEE photo. Desert truffles are fleshy fungi. Desert truffles are called “The potatoes of thunder”, due to their flourishing season after rain. Desert truffles grow from Morocco to Saudi Arabia, known by the Arabic name kamah.
