On a day trip to Yamoussoukro from Abidjan with colleagues, we did the guided tour of the Basilica. It's a replica of St Peter's in Rome, but slightly taller! (St Peter's only keeps the name of biggest church in the world because it has more chapels) It's well worth spending the two hours and two euros it takes to do this tour, it's very informative and makes you appreciate what an amazing piece of engineering this building is! As well as being gorgeous of course.
Be warned, part includes walking around the dome on the outside so take a hat, and take plenty of water when the heat is bearing down.

This church (one of the largest in the world) is truly impressive. We had an excellent tour guide who knew the building from top to bottom as well as the best photo spots. It's a beautiful structure with replicas of famous sculptures with an Ivorian touch. Made the day trip to Yamoussoukro from Abidjan worth it.

Afterwards, head to the crocodile lake closeby for some more great photos!

We had a full day to spend in Abidjan so we had our hotel (we used the Sofitel) arrange for a car and driver. It was not cheap.....a bit less than 2x the taxi rate, but we had him for the day.....although there were a couple times when he kept calling his boss to see if he could take us to the Cathedral in Abidjan as well as to the Basilica in Yamoussoukro (he made it from Abidjan to Yamoussoukro in 2 hrs flat....drove ~140 km/hr most of the way, but he was careful and slowed down often for traffic)....he didn't speak any English but we managed in our poor French....we bought him lunch.....he didn't thank us or anything and you can do that in any language.....but we got what we wanted and he stopped at an art gallery that was hard to find as well.....he didn't seem too familiar with Abidjan though......got us to the airport well in advance of our flight.....so.....the road to Yamoussoukro is paved 4 lane all the way......great road too.....the Basilica really is amazing.....and it's the stained glass that has the impact on you.....although there are several mahogany carvings, Venetian Murano glass, etc. as well. Sure, it's a ridiculous $300,000,000 extravagance but so were all the medieval cathedrals in Europe.....poor people could have used the money......you can photo all the glass from the balcony.....but not from the main floor.....good idea as it preserves the quiet within the Basilica....this is definitely worth the trip from Abidjan.....it will take you a bit more than 4 hrs drive time by car or taxi....allow 6 to be safe...... it opens at 8:30A, nobody has any small change so it can be difficult to buy a Coke....gift shop is typical Roman Catholic.....lots of religious things but very little artistic....so ignore reviews that talk about the great gift shop.....reviewer must have been a Nun......guide will expect a tip....make sure you have small change for him or her.....~$5 seemed adequate for the 2 of us......only problem was he wouldn't stop talking long enough for us to enjoy the Basilica ourselves.....he simply had to get all his numbers out....how high, how much, how many......he says they've had 200,000 people inside and in the portico and square at one time.....we doubt it.....simply finding a place for everyone to stay would be pretty impossible in Yamoussoukro.....even with tents everywhere.......we really didn't think he knew how many people that really was.....we could believe the 18,000 inside at once......when the Pope was present.....but anyway it was well worth it and it does stand out as an amazing building for the modern era......well worth your time.

I got a chance to visit the Bassilica in Yamoussoukro this year. From far, you may not think it carries a lot of details and intricacies on catholic faith. The outside lawns are well kept and the Gardening is meticulous. The cost of visiting is cfa. 2000 for non national and cfa. 1000 for locals. The english speaking guide i was given knows his details to the core, he made me get all i needed to know. The tructure itself is magnificient and with all details given...its worth a visit!

Controversial yes but a great testimony to Papa Houphouet's faith as well as a valuable legacy for Ivory coast.
A must see in Africa!
