Virgin Mary Metekhi church is located on the left bank of the river Mtkvari, on the cliff plateau. Metekhi church is where Vakhtang Gorgasali built his palace, and the site’s first church, when he made Tbilisi his capital in the 5th century. The church was built between 1278 and 1289, and has been reconstructed many times since. The Dome sets on four columns on the east façade. The building is neighbored by the gate in the north and by the open dome in the east; the entrance gate is even in the west. So, very interesting architecture in a very strategic place.

The interior combines considerable scale with impressive intimacy and it was a privilege to be there during a service. I was enchanted by the Art Nouveau wooden main dooras

This is one of the most beautiful sights that should be visited when in Tbilisi. The interior is very beautiful but surprisingly small. The views from the outside are amazing and you get a fantastic panorama of the old city and the river. It is a must see when in Tbilisi and is very close to lots of other attractions that can be reached on foot.

Although the new Tsminda Sameba Holy Trinity Cathedral is far bigger and more impressive, this one marks the Tbilisi landscape, for two reasons.
First, it's dramatic position, in the sole city center at an elevated cliff edge makes it a Tbilisi symbol (the Sameba is further away uphill).
Second, it's very old, dating back to 13 cent., it was several times restored but never demolished, so you're looking at the real history.
To visit it you need some effort in climbing the hill from the back side. You still see the remains of old fortress which once encircled it.
The interior is very nice, not lavishly decorated, but old and mystic mostly in stone and great icons.
From the plateau in front there are fabulous views of all Tbilisi.

I really liked this cathedral. It is very beautiful and big, well located, and has great paintings and relics. It is also full with people, which is always nice to see.
