Stayed at the Marriott, Zamalek in downtown old Cairo. The hotel is a former palace, extended and updated and run by Marriott for many years.
The ambience at the Marriott is unsurpassed in Cairo, due to the location and history of the property.
Services by the Marriott staff in all areas of the hotel was excellent

Room Tip: All rooms God in the 2 accommodation towers. Upper floors best for views
Stayed: April 2018, travelled on business
Thank Derek F

I write this review with a frown on my face. I’ve previously praised the hotel and its staff in a prior review but unfortunately not this time.

I arrived at the hotel and checked in at around 1 a.m. having requested a room facing the Nile in the El-Zamalek tower. Upon arrival, I was informed by the receptionist that I was being upgraded to an executive room because of my status as an elite Marriott member. The upgraded room was confusingly the same like the one I had previously stayed at in El-Gezira Tower. The room was relocated from El-Zamalek tower. The allocated room had a partial view of the Nile, obstructed by the pool. After raising my concerns about the room, the on duty manager insisted that their choice of room was the better of the one I had requested simply because the room cost more.

Unfortunately my impressions only get worse from here. After some reluctance to stay in the room, I accepted the “upgrade”. Two major issues in addition to one minor issue presented themselves as soon as I entered the room. Firstly, having become accustomed to a complimentary bowl of fruit and water bottles in every Marriot I stayed in, their absence this time was immediately apparent. Secondly, the bedsheets seemed clean at a glance but upon closer inspection, the inner bedsheets were wrinkled and had not been properly cleaned. Thirdly, the blackout curtains were full of holes. Strangely enough, I was also not given an Arabic newspaper on the first day of my stay but given one on the second.

I’ve stayed at this hotel in the past and on every occasion I was given the choice of whatever room I wanted, be it in El-Zamalek or El-Gezira Tower.

Stayed: April 2018, travelled solo
