Difficult of access if you do not fancy camel-rides, this monastery sports a few gems and several esoteric-feeling spaces. The tour guide spoke little English but was both informative and entertaining. The view on the Nile from the top is baffling and the complex as a whole is riveting if you can make a little effort of imagination.

there are to monasteries at the place, an ancient one and a new one, and both worth a visit, they tell you about the history of monasticism in this area centuries ago with much wealth about Coptic history, definitely worth a visit

We were going to visit the nubian tower high on the hill, but when we crossed the river, a guy came to us to and proposed us to ride a camel towards the tower, the tombs and the monastery. We didn't know about the tombs and the monastery, but the guy insisted and lowered his price... we got one camel for 100 pound for the trip to the monastery, tower and tombs... Good price. The monastery was the best... We had a great guide explaining everything with a lot of humor

This fascinating site is reached by a steep climb up a hill on the west bank of the Nile, and unless you are young and in top condition you may want to consider hiring a camel to make the ascent. Egypt was the only country outside of Palestine that the Holy Family ever visited, and ,as one of the first countries to become Christian, Egypt offers fascinating insights into early Christianity. Monasticism, both hermitic and communal, .had its origins in Egypt, and any good Christian will find a visit to this site offers a moving testimony to the faith and fervour of the early Church.

You get a 45 minute plod through the desert on a mangy camel to "see" St. Simeon's Monastery in the distance. Turns out the monks got tired of the tourists wanting to tour their very ancient buildings and got the government to build them a spectacular new edifice, not open to tourists.

Yeah, this isn't a review of the buildings, but we were suckered into this one as a "visit" to the monastery. Find a real visit opportunity.
