For our (postponed) honeymoon, my husband and I took a Private 6 Days, 5 Nights Safari to Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru & Amboseli from December 2 2020- Dec 7 2020. This is an in-depth review of our entire experience for those who are worried, like how I was. Overall, our tour was amazing and we would recommend this company to our friends and family.
Joelle- Joelle, our tour guide, went above and beyond to making our experience exciting and special. He was our park expert, animal expert, driver, and photographer. It is obvious he is very experienced and knew the best spots to find the animals. We had so much fun together and Joelle made our entire trip worthwhile.
Tour- The drive was pretty long between parks. It was about 5 hours to Masai Mara, 5 hours to Lake Nakuru and 8 hours to Amboseli. Each park is very different and we saw various animals from all the parks. We were able to see the big five and many newborns around December.
Booking process- I booked using Perfect Wilderness's website. The prices are transparent and the site was easy to navigate. After submitting our request, our main contact was Betty who replied by email. She wrote perfect english and was prompt at replying to all my questions. We originally booked for July 2020, which was postponed due to covid. We originally booked our trip early Dec 2019 because I heard hotels are competitive around the Great Migration. We had to give the full amount of the trip plus a banking fee. We were given the option of wiring the money straight from our bank, which would have had a smaller booking fee. But, our bank teller did not recommend it since there was no way of tracking the money. We tried cancelling due to Covid in May 2020 and we could not get a refund.
Covid Upgrades- We were offered a Masai Mara hotel upgrade due to our original hotel accommodation being closed. We were also offered a vehicle upgrade from a van to a Land Cruiser. I recommend paying more for the Land Cruiser. The ride was very comfortable and we helped towed vans from other tours that were stuck in the mud!
Accommodations- We stayed at Sand River (upgraded), Lake Nakuru Lodge, and AA Lodge Amboseli. All provided Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Afternoon Tea. Sand River was extremely nice. The meals felt like fine dining, the service was outstanding, and the tent were extremely clean. Lake Nakuru Lodge and AA Lodge were comfortable, services were good, food was good, and the beds were relatively clean (be sure to bring mosquito repellent).
Hot Balloon Ride- It was my first time on a hot balloon ride and it was amazing!!! We saw a beautiful sunrise, animals running from a distance, and rose above the clouds!!! Then we had a private group breakfast in the middle of Masai Mara. The company brings in an omelet station/ mini kitchen, a small office to review pictures, a handwashing station, bathroom, tables, and chairs! It was one of my best travelling experiences and I highly recommend it.
Masai Village- It was interesting to learn about the Masai village and people. We recommend it.
Covid Considerations- Everyone we interacted with wore a mask. There are few people in all the accommodations and our overall experience was very private. We were given all the opportunities to wash our hands before eating. We felt we were as safe as we could be traveling.
