I recently stayed at Stopover, it was fabulous. Near the jetty, easy to get to from the airport, just an easy boat ride away. Welcoming staff.
Well appointed rooms, simple, clean, comfortable. Beds have mosquito nets. Water pressure good. Great views of the sea front, able to watch the life of the village happen without feeling like you are intruding. Great sun rises. All the rooms have porches with comfortable furniture to hang out on.
Restaurant on ground floor serves simple breakfasts - eggs just about anyway, toast, fresh juices, tea and coffee.
We went walking on the beautiful beach early in mornings, returned for late breakfast and hung out on the porch until the heat of the day waned. Then we wandered the village, shopped, ate Swahili suppers in local restaurants. On other mornings we went deep sea fishing - didn't catch anything but it was fun; we took a boat taxi to Lamu town to wander and shop. One afternoon we saw a sea turtle hatching with the little turtles making their way to the Indian Ocean - quite remarkable. We went for a sunset sail in an ancient dhow - another experience of the 'wow', 'out of this world' sort.
I had a wonderful time. The Stopover was so convenient for all our needs.
I'll be back....

I gave this a four star rating, not for the food, but for the view and ambiance. It's right on the point of Shela village and affords magnificent views of the fishing boats and jade waters just meters from Manda channel. It's a friendly place where you can chat with local residents and enjoy the fresh breeze. The food is simple, but relatively good value and not too pricey. Well worth a visit.

We visited as a couple with our young twenties daughter. What a surprise as we skim across the water from Manda airport and realise that the hotel right on the sea front is our destination! The beds were decorated with local flowers, were clean and comfortable. The rooms are spacious with en-suite shower and loo and are accessed via a (private) veranda that has lovely views over the bay and local small shipping, mainly dhows.
We enjoyed the classical building style that includes considerable ventilation as default. The hotel service provided by the two staff, Safari and Matthew, was friendly, obliging and courteous. Breakfast was brilliant, with freshly prepared fruit juice, including coconut juice supplied (for us by the pint) and a good range of pancakes etc.
The only real down for our stay was that our dear chef had little imagination as to what comprised a salad. (we really ought to have taken the risk of saying so at the time) In every other respect, his cooking was very good and we were absolutely delighted with our stay and would really love to return.
