Great service, decent food, not crowded at the nearby wall. Quiet surroundings. Short walk to the village and the nearest town. Not far from Simatai. Recommended for anyone who wants to take a walk on the great wall.

Cant fault the service and friendliness of the staff. The rooms and dinning area are new and the room had a great ensuite even a heated toilet seat. Jim the co-manager was very helpful and speaks very good English and is able to give you advice on what parts of the Wall you may wish to visit, how to get there, what there is to see all dependant on your level of energy. 2 of the sections are if you don't mind walking straight out the door in opposite directions the other requires a taxi for the 20min ride. The 2 ladies who did the meals etc were wonderful and really keen to engage, it was really pleasant to stay there as there was just the 2 of us for 3 days and it was interesting to talk with them. Could have stayed a week given how much there is to see. What the rooms do need is more areas to hang clothes for all of those jackets, raincoats, fleeces etc that you tend to wear when walking the Great Wall. Minor issues to what is otherwise a top spot.

Room is simple & clean, perfect location. The best is its western bathroom. The food offered is delicious. The recommended villige restaurant's food is good, too. Provided car service to/from simata is very nice. Car arrangement from/to Beijing is a nice offer, too. Very nice and friendly staff. The hill right across the road is great for sun rise/set viewing, thanks to the staff to point that out, and I wish I have met her the night before so I won't miss the best time of viewing.
If the night light along the path way can stay for the whole night, that would be very nice for night access to bathroom and common area. Also, I did not find cups in my room to brush teeths, which maybe just a coincident.

I traveled with my friend here at the end of August for one night. Both of us enjoyed the stay a lot!

Located at a local village of Gubeikou, Great Box, however, is both traditional and international - with Chinese courtyard design and people from all over the world. The host assistant Mr Liu was friendly and helpful that made the Great box up to the standard. Personally he is also an interesting guy - we listened music and drunk Chinese tea together at night; and climbed the Great Wall together. Other staffs were also nice. The Sichuan lady cooked great spicy noodles!

The room was clean. There was also a Japanese-style toilet which provided warm seat. It is somewhere you can live in as comfortable as in your home for a whole summer.

This is a great place to stay and walk the more 'wild' sections of the Great Wall. The staff are so friendly and helpful, and really go out of their way to help. They have a range of accommodation, from 'backpacker' type shared rooms with a shared bathroom to double and twin rooms with ensuite. We stayed in the latter, and while more expensive, meals were included in the price, which worked out to be quite reasonable for what is basically a 4 star room. The local village is lovely. It is geared to Chinese tourists, so very little English is spoken there, but it has some cheap lunch options if you ask the Box House staff to introduce you to a place with English menus if your Chinese isn't too good. The food (Breakfast and Dinner) at the Box House was magnificent, and the communal meals were a great way to meet other travellers, and share experiences. For those who don't speak much Chinese who want to experience something of China away from the busy, crowded commercial tourist spots this place can't be beaten. It was really an unforgettable experience staying here, one which I can't recommend highly enough.
