I checked in and everything was kind of fine until I asked about my Hilton Gold privileges. Ok, I understand there’s rules, but literally the smiling Automaton (who pretended to be a female check in staff member) smiled as she explained they wouldn’t honour anything on account I’d booked through a 3rd party and hence wasn’t eligible to anything (Gold gets free breakfast, room upgrade if available and some other niceties - which frankly if you stay in hotels as often as I do (150 nights so far this year) you come to appreciate. I didn’t know about the non privileges for booking indirectly, else I’d leave it there.
I explained I was unaware, since I’d stayed in Beijing Airport Hilton and was upgraded to a suite and offered all the benefits, despite having booked via a 3rd party. The usual Singapore treatment is “I’m sorry sir, each property is different, we are very strict, thank you for understanding”. This is the first inflexible encounter, I then spoke to a duty manager (I have redacted names as a gesture of care to those who didn’t care less) who was even more irritating on account of understanding the inconsistency of experiences and expectations as a Hilton guest and proceeded to smile as he too (in his robotic, featureless, characterless and unempathic way - a Singapore hospitality trait I’m way too used to) explained he ‘has authority’ to offer the Gold privileges but won’t.
Perhaps he’s a bit slow or just obtuse, why tell me he has authority but won’t make an exception? Sounds to me like my taxi driver would have more authority, customer service and empathy than the ‘duty’ manager.
Anyway, watevs, I’m no diva, I can move on from the BS attitude of useless robotic staff, but to my utter disappointment and surprise, my room had weird frosting covers on the windows and prison bar steel covering the obscured view from the window beside it. Wanna know why?
Coz the Singapore President resides nearby. Now, I’m totally fine with security and systems designed to protect people and democracies (not sure if Singapore qualifies as genuinely democratic - despite its incredible success as a country and society - the envy of the world and justifiably, it’s a super safe country which is very well run). I digress, what is the purpose of obscuring views of the presidential building, which from the windows, I’d estimate at least 1klm away? Meanwhile, your room feels smaller, and the world outside an after-thought.
Frankly, in the 14 years of travelling regularly to Singapore there’s numerous better hotels than this one. Go on your favourite hotel site and find one which has better amenities, better views and spacial concept and design as well as more understanding and helpful staff, especially if you’re loyal to a brand that clearly doesn’t care less.
