By Singapore standards, a tired and dated hotel. Clean but looking like it’s ready for a shut-down and major overhaul, or demolition.
Unimpressive check-in. Mechanical responses from receptionist, and the concierge who escorted me up to the club lounge said absolutely nothing to me and offered no eye contact when I spoke. The staff at the club lounge were much more professional and chatty.
Club lounge is gloomy, despite many floor-to-ceiling mirrors (which are easy to walk into). Seats and tables too close together - no privacy - and rigid upright seats or a padded bench to sit on. Evening snacks and drinks well presented, but not high quality. Self-serve basic wine, beer and spirits.
Room was spacious but fittings and decor from the 1990s. No USB charging points. Aircon was quiet but controls seemed to do nothing - it was either ON or OFF.
What used to be the main restaurant in the ground floor has been turned into a nightclub - re-used in the morning for breakfast. Rows of tables crammed together, like in a staff canteen, industrial-standard food, food and dishes placed wherever there’s space (on bar top, next to the stage, etc). All black and grey. Gloomy and not recommended.
Overall, it’s easy to see why the price was relatively low. It’s fine if you’re on a tight budget, and the location (Bras Basah) is quote good. But there’s many, many better hotels, at similar price, in Singapore.
