I stayed here numerous times, once for a spell of three weeks, when it was old and somewhat run-down and known as Bayview Hotel. I liked it for its location, which is right in town, close to Orchard Road, and its easy access to public transportation.
Now its location is even better with a new MRT line (Downtown 3) operating just 100 metres away.
But my best surprise when I came to stay this time (in late November 2017) was seeing the hotel in its new incarnation. Closed for renovation until it reopened just three weeks ago, it now looks, feels and smells wonderful. The renovation has been so complete and amazing that no physical trace of the old remains. It's like a totally brand new hotel now. From the lobby to the coffeehouse to the guest rooms, everything has radically changed -- and mostly for the better.
Just a few minor grouses:
The pillows were too soft.
The bathroom of my deluxe room could be bigger.
The water pressure was not strong enough, which took me longer to feel satisfied with my bath.
And although I liked the long worktable, which allowed for two people to set up laptops if they so wished, I longed for an armchair to facilitate reading and relaxation.
Despite these, I would highly recommend 30 Bencoolen as a place to stay. Despite its being in the city centre, it's quiet in the room. The staff are friendly and helpful.
I'll certainly keep coming back here when I visit Singapore.
