After a failed attempt at a staycation at another hotel, we changed to York Hotel with specific requirements of breakfast and better room sizes.
Unexceptional to view on arrival, the foyer is however quite lovely.
They did not disappoint with exceptionally large, well appointed rooms. The bathroom was however, very small which was a shame. Some pictures on other reviews appear to be of updated suites. Given there was next to no one in the hotel, it would have been nice to be given one of these rooms.
Location is excellent and a huge plus us the hotel is very quiet. There is virtually no sound transfer whatsoever which was fantastic.
The rooms and common areas do smell very damp. There is an immediate need to update certain aspects with deterioration and age evident in the suites. A larger TV for the space is needed given the room is quite large. Cleaning under the beds and window sills is needed and probably best to remove evidence of prior guests smoking from the bathroom before the next guest arrived.
Check in was friendly and efficient. Staff were mostly pleasant but we did have a weird conversation with a front desk manager on our return one afternoon when when we were asked why we were knocking on the door of the room next door (we didn't). Not sure what the issue was - perhaps a clearer conversation on this would have helped!
Breakfast was tasty and plentiful but very meaty. The menu form is not clear that even the bread comes with a meat curry. We ordered two eggs but ended up with two plates each of two eggs, sausages, bacon, beans and potatoes. Given we are vegetarian this could have been highlighted on the menu. The only compliant was the cheese was very chemically tasting and was a cheese plate of four cuts of the same cheese.
Worth it for the room size, peace and location.
