Owner description: Affectionately known among locals as the "durian", Esplanade is one of the busiest arts centres in the world with about 3,000 performances presented yearly. Spot our prickly cladding in the middle of the central arts and cultural district, and take in the view from the Marina bay waterfront where our Outdoor Theatre is situated. Coming to Esplanade means that you're in for a complete lifestyle experience, from enjoying a night out at a show, to shopping and dining. And whether you're a first-timer, an ardent patron or fellow arts lover, you're most welcome here and we'll do our best to give you a great experience with the arts.

We didn't go to see a play or a show here but we headed straight for the roof. A friend had recommended to go up here for the great views over the Bay and she was right - fabulous views!

I am here weekly and I think it's a pity that many foreign visitors miss out on 2 parts of this place.

First, the roof terrace. The roof terrace is open throughout most of the day and into late evening. No admission charge. Make your way up there and you will be rewarded with a nice view of the bay and the city area and a closer view of the spikes that make up the roof. There is also a bar which opens from late afternoon. There are also ample places to sit around. Best time to visit is the late afternoon or evening when it is not so hot. To get to the roof terrace, take the escalator or lift to the second level and from there, follow the signs to go up to the roof terrace.

Secondly, the library. You do not need to be a member to enter the library. This is an oasis of calm. There are plenty of art-related books for reading such as those on films, dramas, plays and music as well as plentiful newspapers, including foreign papers. However, the CDs, DVDs and other audio-visual materials are accessible only to members. There is a cafe within that serves decent food and drinks in a quiet setting. Throughout the library are plenty of comfortable seats some of which are located next to windows with splendid views. The staff are generally friendly and helpful.

First thing that catches the eye has to be the design. Not sure what the architects were thinking but to most people in South East Asia, the durian fruit comes immediately to mind. Nice relaxed waterfront location, always featured during telecasts of the annual Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. Inside, performance spaces and theatres are excellent for their sound properties. Good but slightly pricey food inside, much cheaper food within easy walking distance nearby including shopping mall across the road.

Nicknamed 'The Durian' by locals and tourists alike the beautiful theatres are fabulous inside and out. Especially lovely in the evening when lit up in royal blue lights.
